A question I often get asked is this one. "What's the most important stat for marketing a product as an affiliate?" Well, this isn't a very easy question to answer because stats can be so misleading. There's an old saying...lies, damn lies and statistics. There is a reason for it. Anyway, in this article, I'm going to cover a few of the main stats affiliate marketers look at and give you my opinion of their importance or lack thereof. Let's start with gravity. This is one stat that affiliate marketers look at, usually, before anything else. They see a high gravity and immediately assume that the product is a big seller. What they don't understand is that, for starters, gravity can be manipulated through some rather devious tactics that I won't get into here. For another, just because a product has a high gravity doesn't mean that it's going to be easy to sell. In fact, for a beginning affiliate, high gravity products, because of the competition, can be very hard to sell. Because of this, gravity is a very misleading stat. What about referred percentage? This is the percentage of sales that are sold by affiliates. By itself, the stat is actually meaningless. Why do I say that? Let's say you find a product that has a referred percentage of 100%. This would lead you to believe that all the sales of it are coming from affiliates, meaning it's very easy to sell. But what if it's a new product and the actual raw numbers (which you can't know) reveal that there are only three affiliates selling the product? Without more affiliates out there AND the product creator actively selling it, there is no way to know TRULY what success affiliates are having. Finally, we have dollars per sale. I admit that I sometimes allow myself to get sucked into this stat and I should know better. This may be the most misleading stat of all. The reason is as follows. Many product creators sell more than one product under one account. So you could see a dollar per sale of say $30 for a product when in reality, the product is selling for a lot less or a lot more. The other products in the catalog may be responsible for the price that is displayed. That's why you MUST actually go to the sale page to see what the product is ACTUALLY selling for. So what does all this tell you? It tells you that you really can't depend on any ONE statistic because as I said, stats lie. With affiliate marketing...it's no different. If you think that any business is immune to the effects of the world around it, think again. And yes, even food stores go out of business. The key to surviving is to understand how to make the best of both the good and the bad times. In this article, I'm going to share a few ideas that, hopefully, will keep you afloat even when things aren't going so well. Let's start with when things are going well. Lots of business owners will sit back and relax during these times. They won't do any research for future products or anything in looking towards the future. This is a big mistake. No economy in the history of our world has ever remained stagnant and that's not likely to change any time soon. One must always be looking towards the future. The question is, how do we do this? One way is to keep an eye on technology. I have found that changes in technology have a great impact on business, especially if your business depends on it. Let's say you sell a product that is a piece of technology and somebody comes out with something that is better and cheaper. Unless you take your product and work on ways to improve it, you're going to lose market share. There is no way around this. What if you're selling informational products? Information is always changing. Therefore, you have to constantly be aware of any changes. For example, if you're in the alternative health niche, there are going to be new developments regularly. If you're not aware of these developments, your product could become obsolete literally overnight. This is also true in the make money online niche. Many books on pay per click advertising become almost obsolete because of changes in PPC rules. In bad times, this steady research is even more important. The first one to come out with the new breakthrough is going to be the first one to dig himself out of the hole he's in. That's why it is critical to always be aware of the changes around you. By doing this, you give yourself the best chance of keeping your home business in the black. To YOUR Success, Steven Wagenheim Looking for a solid 4 step plan to building your own business...FREE? I've been writing articles for longer than I care to admit. And believe it or not, I too get burnt out. As a matter of fact, after taking some time off for my 25th anniversary, I didn't think I could write another word when I get back. I was really spent. So what do you do when this happens? Well, I can tell you what I did and what I have done at other times when this has happened to me. Probably the most important thing is to take a deep breath and relax. When you're burnt out and HAVE to write something, what happens is you end up putting more stress on yourself. You need to get something written, can't do it, and end up pressing that much harder. This is only going to make matters worse. You need to take a step back and forget about writing for just a few minutes. Clear your mind and pretend that you're going to be writing for the very first time. No, it's not the cure all, but it's the start that you need. After you've done that, think about what it is you have to write about. It's either a subject that you know very well or one that you have to research. If it's one you have to research, go ahead and do it. Read as much as you can about the subject. You can even mention in your article that you read so and so in such and such a publication and relay what it is you read. Give you opinion on it. Certainly you have some kind of opinion. Everybody does. Opinions are the easiest things to write. Start with those. Finally, make a list of all the possible things you could write about in regard to your topic. For example, let's say you get asked to write an article on bowling. There are so many angles you can take on the subject. You could write about the history of the game. You could write about the great pro bowlers of all time. You could write about just ONE particular bowler. You could write an article on the rules of the game. You could write an instructional article such as how to throw a hook. You could write about how to choose a bowling ball. As you can see, there are MANY sub topics to choose from. By going from the broad to the specific, you should have no trouble coming up with something to write. We all get burnt out...even me. But if you go about this in a methodical way, you'll find that you can easily get through the process. To YOUR Success, Steven Wagenheim Want to write articles that get people's attention and can earn you up to $200 per article written? I've had a lot of time to do a lot of thinking about this industry (IM) since the passing of my mother on June 1 of this year. I don't like a lot of what I see...as I am sure a lot of people reading this blog post don't as well. Sometimes I get the feeling that I'm watching "The Blue and the Gray" on the A&E channel. It's that ugly out there. Customers screaming at product creators for creating crappy products, using unethical marketing tactics and doing just about anything that they can to make the sale...at all costs. Product creators screaming about customers buying products and refunding two seconds later or about how customers are so unreasonable with their requests. The war goes on and on and on. Well, I have a news flash for those on both sides of this war. If you're not part of the solution...you're part of the problem. Buyers I'm going to put a lot of this on you, like it or not. Sure, there is a lot of crap being sold out there. I myself have bought it so I know. And yes, there are some really shady marketing practices going on. I won't list them all because we all know what they are. But guess what? If you don't open up your mouth and say something (preferably do something) then nothing is going to change. This means... 1. When you buy a crappy product, return it and never buy from that person again. If enough people do this product creators will be forced to actually create something worth while. 2. When you see a marketing tactic that you don't like, boycott that person's products. Get off their list(s). Don't support that person. Let them know that you don't approve of their methods. 3. When you don't receive support that you were promised for a product, don't buy from that person again. It is so easy to promise things but very hard to follow through on those promises without putting in a degree of effort...something a lot of people have problems doing. 4. When you've been promised content for joining a list and don't get it but instead just get sales pitch after sales pitch...unsubscribe. Send a message to the person. In short, if you feel that a marketer is not providing a quality product or service and is using methods that are less than honorable, it is YOUR responsibility to do YOUR part to put a stop to it. Maybe if enough people said... "I'm not supporting you any longer" These people would have no choice but to change their ways. Again, if you're not part of the solution...you're part of the problem. Sellers You have a responsibility as well. You are working in an industry with a lousy reputation...like it or not. Therefore, it is YOUR responsibility to: 1. Create quality products. 2. Offer competent customer support. 3. Use ethical marketing tactics. If you don't do these things, you TOO are part of the problem and the reason why buyers are going to bitch so much. Yes, I know...there will be people who you won't ever be able to please. They will find fault with everything you do. As hard as I try to always create quality products and market in an ethical way, I have people who email me for refunds and tell me that they don't like what I do. But those people are very few and far in between. Is it because I'm so good? Or is it because people are so apathetic that they don't bother telling me that I'm screwing up? I have NO WAY OF KNOWING if you don't open your mouth and say something. Okay, got it? We are ALL part of the problem if we don't speak up and let each side know what we don't like. And sellers, if you run into serial refunders, ban them from buying from you again. Don't just "chalk it up" to the cost of doing business. That's BS. Again, if you're NOT part of the solution...you're part of the problem. Together...we can clean up this dirty industry. One protest at a time. To YOUR Success, Steven Wagenheim

You're on a few email lists, right? Sure you are. All Internet marketers are on at least one list, most likely several of them. I can't even begin to tell you how many lists I belong to. And the one thing I notice, especially from the big players, is that they all follow a specific game plan when sending out their sales pitches and other emails. So the question I'm going to ask is simple. Do you follow the crowd and do what everybody else is doing or do you do your own thing? This article is going to take an objective look at this issue. Let's first define the parameters of what I call "following the crowd." Yes, there are exceptions, but this is what I have found to be true for most of the big names in the business. If you read their emails, they're pretty over the top...eye grabbing subjects either promising the moon or warning you that if you don't open this NOW you're going to miss out. Everything is time sensitive and urgent. You'd think the world was coming to an end. Inside the emails we see copy like content. It's like reading these mega sales letters. Heck, with some of these pitches, you don't even need a sales letter. Just send them to a page with a buy now link and you're done. Hey, I've done it myself and it works. If it didn't, these big guns wouldn't be doing it year after year. But do you have to follow the crowd? Is this the only way to make a sale? I can honestly say that I have sent out emails that have been straight forward with no over the top subject to get the prospect to open it. And yet, I have done very well with these straight forward emails. My list is responsive, and not only that...they appreciate that I don't beat them over the head with my offers. Ultimately, YOU have to decide how you're going to handle your OWN list. Some lists don't respond to hype. Some don't respond to straight forward. Some will respond to either. It's just a matter of which they respond to better. The only way you're going to know is to test each tactic for yourself and see what results you get from each. But trust me, you DON'T have to follow the crowd if you don't want to. To YOUR Success, Steven Wagenheim Tired of not getting your emails delivered, read or opened? A well known Internet marketing forum (no, I'm not giving you the name) has activated some very interesting code that is going to change the way people use the forum itself. I'm going to fill you in on what the code does and then give you my opinion of how effective I think it's going to be in the long run. Please note, this is just my opinion so take it with a grain of salt. The code in question is very simple. Members can use the word YOU in brackets, like this [YOU] and what happens is this. The member reading the thread or post thinks that the thread is referencing that person's name. When the code was first instituted it got quite a reception. The responses were off the charts. However, upon examining this functionality, I saw the dangers of using it, especially when in the wrong hands. A clever mind can compose threads that will make the person think that some terrible things are being said about them, unless of course the thread is deleted before it manages to do any damage. But there is an even bigger problem than the damage that the code itself can do. The problem is that whenever a thread legitimately mentions a member's name, the member reading it (if it's THEIR name) won't know if it's real or just part of the forum code fun. And that's where the trouble begins. For example, right now at that forum, there is a thread started by somebody looking for somebody who COULD be another member. Now, imagine that member knows about the code, sees the thread and decides that it's just a joke and ignores it. In the meantime, the person looking for help from this member is not going to get it because they're going to be ignored. This is going to be very true for the members who have been there long enough to know the code exists. Will it be effective in advertising sections? Maybe for new people coming to them, but for the majority, it will probably have little effect, if any at all. As a matter of fact, senior forum members might look at the thread as a cheap advertising tactic, ignore it, and thus actually lower the number of sales the advertiser gets. As I said, this is just my opinion and I could be wrong. So let me know what you think. Is this code a good idea or a bad one? I guess time will tell. What YOU think doesn't matter. That's right. I might as well just say it straight and to the point. YOUR opinion doesn't mean squat. Okay, now before you start jumping all over me ready to rip my head off of my shoulders, you might want to read the rest of this article. I promise you that it will be a real eye opener. Today, I stumbled upon some new forum functionality that I absolutely did not like. I made my opinions of this functionality very clear. Guess what? The majority of the forum members did not agree with me. Sure, some did. But the majority had no problem with it. Okay, so what does this tell you? For starters, while this is just one isolated thing, it does show that while you may have a problem with something, that doesn't mean that others will have a problem with it as well. But more importantly, what it shows is that before you make any judgments on anything related to marketing, you need to get feedback from other people. Your prejudices may very well hurt your business more than you realize. Let's take, as an example, the issue of email marketing and personalized subject lines and content. Some people have a real problem with these autoresponder functions because they know, as marketers themselves, that the email really isn't personalized and that it's just autoresponder code. Others are drawn to the functionality and respond to it positively and some just totally ignore it. The key to YOUR marketing is to test the functionality with YOUR list and see how THEY react. That is the ONLY thing that matters and NOT your own opinion. Otherwise, you may lose out on a great deal of income either because you used or didn't use something. Is this easier said than done? You better believe it is. Truth is, I let my prejudices get to me today as I am writing this. I should have waited to see how other people reacted before I put my two cents in. Instead, I opened up my big mouth and had it handed back to me in pieces. I admit, I was surprised that most people didn't find a problem with it, but again, that doesn't matter. What matters is that I let my own feelings cloud my judgment. So, if you want to make the most of your marketing efforts, forget your prejudices. Leave them at the door. And listen to your target market. To YOUR Success, Steven Wagenheim Tired of busting your behind for peanuts online? With all the complaining I do about the fact that so many people can't spell, maybe I should be thankful for these people. Were it not for them, cashing in on misspellings wouldn't be a great tactic for making a few extra bucks online. In this article, I'm going to go over a great way to do just that. It's effective and can be done at minimal cost. At the top of my list is cashing in on domain name misspellings. Let's say somebody is looking up the web site bluewidgets dot com but instead they type in bluewigets dot com, leaving out the "d" in bluewidgets. The first thing you need to do, of course, is grab that domain name. Lots of misspellings are still available. But just getting the domain itself is only the start of the process. In order to monetize that domain, you need to look at the original domain to see what it is that people are looking to find there. What kind of product is it? Is it something that people have to spend money on? At the very least, does it have relevant AdSense ads that you can make some money off of? There needs to be a clearly visible way on the web site to make money. Otherwise, you're probably going through this exercise for nothing. Then, what you need to do is put content on YOUR site the compliments the kind of content that one would find on the site they were actually looking for. Do NOT steal any of the site's content. Think of your own related way to make money from the site you're putting together. One thing you might want to put at the top of your page is a message that reads "Looking For Bluewidgets dot com? Check out what I have to offer before you get on your way." If you put together a good site with relevant info to what the prospect is searching for, you have a good shot at making a few sales. You can do the above at the cost of hosting and a domain, which is roughly about $70 a year. If you land a great misspelling, you can easily triple that in income monthly. It's certainly something to consider in your arsenal of income generation tactics. To YOUR Success, Steven Wagenheim Tired of busting your behind for peanuts online? If you asked me what the most important thing was for having a successful home business, I'd have to say that a good reputation was up towards the top of the list. Some people just don't get this. It takes months or even years to really build a reputation online and yet, it can be destroyed in a heartbeat. This article is going to go over just a few ways to ruin your reputation. I hope you will take these words to heart. Probably the best way to kill your reputation is to deliver a shoddy product. You may be able to get a person to buy the first time, but after they see how bad the product is, they'll either return it or never buy another product from you again should you have more than one. Eventually, you WILL run out of customers. Plus, once the word spreads that your products are garbage, a lot of potential customers will stay far, far away. And trust me, negative press travels quickly. Another way to kill your reputation, assuming you have a good product, is to offer lousy customer service. Like it or not, customers are going to have questions and/or problems that will need to be answered and solved. If you don't get back to these people, assuming you've even given them a way to reach you, you're going to have quite a few unhappy customers. Customer service is what separates one business from another. So if you want a good reputation, deliver quality customer service. Finally, and this is what gets a lot of people into tons of trouble, there is bad mouthing the competition. Look, I understand that you want to explain to people why YOUR product is better than the competition's, but you can do this without bad mouthing. Nobody likes a business person who knocks somebody else. It's not professional and ultimately, word is going to get out that you practice this sort of thing. When that happens, your reputation is going to take a severe hit. These three things (there are others) are at the top of my list for killing your reputation. So make sure that you focus on them. It could mean the difference between success and failure. To YOUR Success, Steven Wagenheim Looking for a solid 4 step plan to building your own business...FREE? How can you gauge your improvement as an article writer? It's not like there's some piece of software you can run your articles through and get some kind of a score. And the truth is, the "quality" of an article is pretty subjective. One person may read it and think it's great while another person may think it's a piece of garbage. So how can you tell if you're getting any better at this? Certainly you don't want to keep spinning your wheels writing one lousy article after another. Well, this little piece is going to offer some suggestions on how to tell if you're getting any better at this. Probably the best way to tell is simply get as many people as you can to read your articles and ask for feedback. Now, because people's lives are so busy and their time is limited, you might want to offer some incentive for them to comply. However, make it perfectly clear that you want honest feedback. You're not buying their vote. Let them know that you truly want to find out if you're getting any better at this. Most people will be honest with you. Another way to tell if your articles are getting any better is by submitting them to article directories and seeing two things. The first is how many views your articles are getting and being acted upon compared to your earlier works. If you're getting better, the views and clicks on your resource box should improve. The second thing is how many people are taking your articles from these directories and putting them on their site. If this number is increasing, then most likely you're getting better as a writer. Finally, and this is the hardest one of all, be honest with yourself. Read your earlier works and then read your most recent ones and see if you can spot a difference. It's not easy to do, I admit. But if I read some of my very early works (during ancient times) I can clearly so how I've improved. I'm more conscious of word flow now than I used to be. I also break up my thoughts better and stay on topic better. These are things I can clearly see. Bottom line is this. The more you write, the better you're going to get at this. But just to make sure, have people read your work, see what kind of response you get from article directories and be honest with yourself when reading your articles. You'll get a pretty good feel for how far you've come. To YOUR Success, Steven Wagenheim Want to write articles that get people's attention and can earn you up to $200 per article written?
