Article Writing Tips – Are You Getting Too Comfortable?
Filed under: Article Writing; Tagged as: Article Writing, tips on article writing, writing an articleNo CommentsThere is a saying that goes something like this. “Physician heal thyself.” So let me tell you something, I am as guilty of this as the next guy. What am I talking about? I’m talking about getting so comfortable with your writing that you no longer grow as a writer. I have to admit, I have gotten quite complacent of late. I’ve been writing for so long (over 30 years) that I kind of take it for granted. So, I am going to take my own advice that I am dishing out in this article. If I can do it, you can do it too.
Okay, so your writing is gutting a little stale. The first thing to do in order to rectify this situation is to get out of your comfort zone by writing an article on a topic you know nothing about. I want you to pick the most uninteresting thing you can think of and write about it. Naturally, that means you’re going to have to do some research on the topic. I want you to go to the library and take out some books on the subjects. If there are magazines on the subject, read them too. Get as educated as you can. Then, take one aspect of the subject and write about it.
Your first attempt is probably going to stink. Good! That means you’re out of your comfort zone. Now, the next step is to take a look at what you’ve written and see how you can improve on it. Maybe you need more facts. Maybe they need to be more organized. Have you clearly stated, in your opening paragraph, what the article is going to focus on? For that matter, did you pick an aspect of the topic that can even be expanded into a full article?
Next, take the article you just wrote and compare it to what you normally write. Is the structure the same or at least similar? If not, why not? Does the subject not lend itself to a similar structure or is your unfamiliarity with the subject matter make it difficult to follow a set structure? Remember, when we write about things we don’t really know that well, we tend to get lost in the details because we have to concentrate on them so much that we end up forgetting out ABCs of how to actually write an article.
If you try tackling the above as I have outlined it, you will find that suddenly, you’ve become a better writer.
To YOUR Success,
