Article Writing Tips – B is For Brevity

Yes, I’m actually going to attempt to do article writing A-Z. I may fall on my face before I finish but it’s going to be fun trying. Today’s exciting installment brings us to the letter B for brevity. So I’m going to be as brief as possible in explaining why brevity is sometimes preferable over a long winded article.

The world’s attention span is getting shorter and shorter. Our lives are more hectic and there aren’t enough hours in the day to do all the things that we want to do. So the last thing most people want, when looking for an article that is hopefully going to solve a problem that they have, is one that is so long winded that they give up on reading it two paragraphs in when the author still hasn’t said anything worth while.

A good article that gives people the facts shouldn’t be any longer than 500 words unless you’re writing on something that requires a PhD to understand. And then, in that case, every word of that article should say something. If you’re going to be long winded, it better count. Naturally, every topic is different. You can’t pigeon hole everything into one hole, but for the most part, if you can’t make your point in under 500 words, it wasn’t worth making.

What you just read was 221 words that pretty much got the point across. You should clearly understand what I’m trying to point out. Now, getting to the point…that’s a different story altogether. There are many ways to do it. But the simplest way is to be direct.

Tell the person what you’re going to tell them.
    Tell them.
    Sum up.

It’s that simple. Too many writers complicate the process and end up losing their audience. So, in following my own advice, I’m going to sign off now with this simple instruction.
