Article Writing Tips – Clarification of Key Points

So many article writers take things for granted. News flash, not everything we put in print is clear. Oh, we think it is, but when you’re writing about complex issues, which we do from time to time, it’s sometimes necessary for us to explain things…just a bit. The problem is doing this without making the reader feel like we’re treating them like an idiot. If we’re going to clarify some points, we need to do it in a way that’s casual enough so that the reader doesn’t even notice it, yet gets what we’re trying to get across.

This is one of those topics that’s probably better served with an example. So let’s say we’re writing an article about blogging and in it we go over keeping your WordPress blog updated with the current version. We talk about how WordPress has automatic updates that you can do at the press of a button. Now, unfortunately, there is a plugin automatic update that works in a similar fashion, but quite honestly, doesn’t work as well. And it’s easy to get confused between the two options. So, after we mention the automatic update process, we might want to add the following clarification to our article.

“Please note, there are actually two automatic updates available for a WordPress blog. The one, you’ll see at the top of your WordPress admin area that will say a new update is available with the version number that has a link to click. This is the one you want to use and NOT the one that comes as a plugin option. This is an easy thing to overlook for anyone.”

Notice how I said it was easy to overlook for anyone. This is said to make the reader feel that we’re not implying that anybody should be able to figure out which update to use. It’s a tactful way of clarifying the point you want to make so that the reader doesn’t look at your signature at the end of the article and want to throw darts at it.

This is something that you learn over time. Some people are just not naturally tactful and they’ll say something like, “Don’t be an idiot and use that stupid plugin.” They just don’t know any better. But you’ll catch more flies with honey if you just use a little tact.

I have no doubt, because you’re a pretty bright person, that this is clear enough.

    See how simple it is?
