Article Writing Tips – D is For Destination

As we chug away on our journey to article writing greatness, we’re up to the letter D in our A-Z series. If you’re scratching your head wondering how I came up with “destination” for this article, don’t worry, by the time you’re done reading, this will be as clear as a bell to you. So let’s get right down to it.

One of the biggest problems article writers have is that when they sit down to start writing, they really don’t have a clear cut goal in mind. They have some idea what they want to say but they haven’t really mapped out where they’re going to begin and how they’re going to end their article. In short, they have no destination or have no idea how they’re going to get there.

Now, with simple articles, this isn’t too much of a problem. Let’s say you’re writing an article on a simple health cure. You might start with what the disease is, move onto what causes it, what the standard treatments are and finally what a safe alternative is. And even with a road map this easy to map out, some article writers get hopelessly lost.

So imagine what happens when you want to write an article about the problem with video games as they influence our youth. The research alone is enough to drive people crazy. What studies have been done? Is there a relationship between violent video games and teen violence? What slant are you going to take? Are you going to focus on several different problems, such as violence, ADD, or what? Are you going to touch on the role of parents in supervising kids? What order will you write these things in? What’s going to come first? Are you going to write a pro or con article?

I could keep asking questions about this topic until hell freezes over and I still will have only scratched the surface of possible sub topics and slants. You can imagine how difficult it is for a beginning writer to be able to weed through a topic like this, pick out an ultimate destination and then figure out how they’re going to get from point A to point B. For that matter…what point A should even be.

So before you sit down to write any article, make sure you know what your destination is and how you’re going to get there. The best way to do this is with a simple outline. Write it all out in outline form first. Then see if the outline flows and makes sense.

You’ll find, when all is said and done, that you’ve written one heck of a great article.
