Article Writing Tips – Dealing With Terms of Service of Directories
Filed under: Article Writing; Tagged as: Article Writing, tips on article writing, writing an articleNo CommentsI get a real kick out of some article writers. They complain about everything you can imagine. One of their biggest complaints is the terms of service (hereafter referred to as TOS) of the article directories that they’re submitting their articles to. These directories have these TOS for a reason. This article is going to explain some of those reasons..
I’m not going to go over all the TOS here because we’d be here for a week. I’m just going to cover some of the main ones you will commonly see at most directories. Probably the biggest one is article length. Most directories have a minimum article length ranging anywhere from 250 words to 1,000 words or more per article. The reason for this is simple. If there wasn’t a minimum length, writers would be tossing up articles so short that they wouldn’t be worth reading. This would, in turn, make the content at the directory useless.
Another TOS has to do with links in your articles. Some directories don’t allow any links in the article body whatsoever. Others will allow one link but only if it’s in the lower third of the article. The reason why there is such a strict policy on links is because article directories don’t want the articles to end up being nothing but sales pitches. Can you imagine not having any restrictions at all? You’d see articles with so many links that you’d think it was an advertisement and not an article.
Finally, the last TOS I’m going to cover here, there is the restriction on writing articles about specific brand name items. The reason for this, regardless of whether the article is pro or against the item, is because article directories don’t want to take any responsibility for any lawsuits from these brands against an article that might not put them in the best light. They just don’t need the headaches, especially if you plan on writing an article bashing a certain product. So yes, many article directories disallow product reviews.
When you understand the reasons behind these TOS you’ll get a better appreciation for why you’re not allowed to do certain things. Yeah, I know…it’s a royal pain when your main article writing gig is doing product reviews. The alternative is simply to put the reviews on your own site or blog OR…start your own article directory.
Now THERE’S a novel approach. Then you can make your OWN TOS.
You’ll just have to then deal with all the article writers hell bent on breaking them.
