Article Writing Tips – E is For Enhancement
Filed under: Article Writing; Tagged as: Article Writing, tips on article writing, writing an articleNo CommentsThis is kind of an advanced lesson on article writing. It’s not for beginners. So if you’re just starting out, you might want to skip it until you’ve had some experience writing simple articles. We’re up to the letter E (for those of you who are keeping track) and that stands for enhancement. You’re going to find a lot of that in this article itself, if you haven’t already picked it out. It’s how you turn a dull 250 word article into a 450 word piece of work that people will enjoy reading. Keep reading to find out more.
Let’s take the above paragraph as a perfect example of enhancement. I could have simply said…
“This article is going to show you how to enhance your articles. Keep reading to find out more”
And left it at that. After all, the above is really all the information you need to know what’s coming next. Of course, this isn’t much of an intro paragraph, is it? So to make it a little more interesting, I added some things to it…quite a few things actually.
Let’s take this sentence.
“We’re up to the letter E (for those of you who are keeping track) and that stands for enhancement.”
I could have easily left out the part in parenthesis, but it was inserted to add a little color to the article…also to point out that this is one of a continuing series of articles and suggest that maybe you might want to keep track of them. It was a very subtle way of doing it too.
Then you have this sentence.
“You’re going to find a lot of that in this article itself, if you haven’t already picked it out.”
Here, I’m pointing out that the reader is going to find examples of enhancement in this article, if they already haven’t found the examples. This also could have been left out, but it hints to what enhancement actually is and makes the reader think.
A lot of people call enhancement filler. It is, but it’s filler with a purpose. Filler with no purpose is just that, and not worth a hill of beans. It takes a certain skill to enhance an article without turning it into a meaningless tirade. Enhancement can even come down to the single word.
For example…these two sentences.
“I’m going to show you how to write a great headline.”
“I’m going to briefly show you how to come up with a great headline.”
The second sentence is enhanced in that it explains that what’s to follow will be brief. It also uses “come up with” instead of “write a”. The difference is psychological. Writing sounds like work. Coming up with sounds like it materializes out of thin air…subtle differences but important.
As you write more and more, you’ll figure out how to enhance your articles and ultimately make them more enjoyable to read.
