Article Writing Tips – H is For Honesty

You would think that I wouldn’t even need to write an installment about honesty in article writing, but after seeing some of the garbage that gets peddled as “truth” each day, it’s obvious that some article writers just don’t get the message. So in this installment of our article writing A-Z series, we’re going to tackle the letter H and honesty. This may ruffle a few feathers. So be it.

Know what ticks me off? All those health articles that preach these wonderful natural cures for all these horrible diseases like all these writers have personal experience with all these cures. I mean, come on. If I had as many problems as some of these article writers, I’d be dead. When you write about something that involves health, you have a responsibility to your reader to at least be honest. That means if you haven’t personally tried this “cure” don’t say you have. You can report what others have said, quoting testimonials if you like. There is nothing wrong with that. But anything you say about the product personally better come from actual experience and not from a wild imagination.

But there’s another kind of honesty in article writing and it has nothing to do with the facts of the article itself. It has to do with your style and the way you give the information. I understand that you’re going to speak differently to different markets, but for crying out loud, don’t try to be something you’re not or portray yourself as something you’re not to your readers. In other word, if you’re writing an article about hip hop and starting your own hip hop label, unless you really have experience in the business, don’t try to make readers think that you’re some hot shot record producer. There is nothing wrong with simply saying that you have some knowledge of the business from studying books and hanging around with some friends. You’ll get more respect from your readers that way.

There’s way too much BS in the world and it’s giving writers a bad name. So make sure what you write is the truth and that you honestly portray yourself in the article and not make yourself out to be some Svengali.
