Article Writing Tips – How to Keep From Running Off at the Mouth
Filed under: Article Writing; Tagged as: Article Writing, tips on article writing, writing an articleNo CommentsHave you ever read an article that you wondered if it would ever end? I’m not so much talking about an article that is boring. I’m talking about an article that seems to have said what it meant to say and yet, it just keeps on going. It’s a common problem with many writers. This article is going to show you how to write YOUR article so that it doesn’t turn into a long drawn out story.
For starters, you need to know your material inside and out and be sure of it. The reason a lot of articles turn into long drawn out stories is because the author doesn’t really know his subject matter all that well and to compensate for it, he feels he has to keep on writing in order to “impress” people with his knowledge. All this is going to do is turn your audience away. So know what you’re talking about and be sure of it.
Secondly, many writers don’t spend the time to actually create an outline for their article. Now, each outline is going to be unique to the article itself, so I can’t give you a “one size fits all” method for writing an outline. However, at the start of it, you should at least have a paragraph telling the reader what they’re about to read so that they can decide whether or not they want to even bother reading it at all. No sense wasting anybody’s time. After the initial paragraph, break down each thought (however many there may be) into subsequent paragraphs. How many you have isn’t important. What IS important is that you have a beginning, middle and end.
Finally, the best way to tie up an article on most subjects is to relate back to the initial premise or point of the article itself… what you started off with in paragraph one… your introduction. This way, you end up tying everything together in a nice tidy little package. It’s cookie cutter, but it’s effective as it gets the job done. That job is making sure that you don’t run off at the mouth. If you look at the structure of this very article, you’ll see that’s exactly what I did.
Ultimately, you want to keep your reader interested. A well structured article with an intro, middle and end will do that. An outline will greatly help in getting that intro, middle and end. Sure, it will take a little bit more of your time to write one, but in the long run…it will MORE than be worth it.
And of course, it doesn’t hurt to know what you’re talking about.
