Okay, maybe I’m stretching this one a little bit but hey, cut me some slack. It’s tough doing an article writing A-Z series. Anyway, in this installment, we’re up to the letter K. K stands for my favorite word when it comes to tips…killer. Everybody wants that one killer tip that is going to put them over the top. Well, when it comes to article writing, the one killer tip that I live by is something that should really be no problem for anybody. Why is this so? When you find out what the tip is, you’ll understand.

It’s be yourself. Okay, now why is this something that should be no problem for anybody to do, no matter how well they actually write? The answer is simple. See, each person is an individual. Did you know that there is absolutely nobody exactly like you in the whole world? It’s true. Nobody looks exactly like you or thinks like you or acts like you…not even your twin brother or sister. The fact that you were born even just a few seconds apart, makes you different.

But why is being yourself so important to writing? Here is the answer and please get this. There is a world of writers out there…millions of them. You are competing for a very limited amount of air space. It is so easy to get lost in the soup that it’s not even funny. So let me ask you a question, if you try to write like, well, like me…what’s going to happen? At best you become a cheap imitation. People will compare you to me and in most cases, they’ll say you’re just not as good. This is true in some many disciplines.

Take music. Remember when Yes came out? Shortly after, a group by the name of Starcastle came out. They sounded almost exactly like Yes and everybody compared them to Yes. Tell me, what ever happened to Starcastle? Did they ever achieve the stardom that Yes achieved? No, they didn’t. They drifted into obscurity just like all the other groups that tried to sound like somebody else.

There is something inside of YOU that makes you unique. You need to find that something and bring it out in your writing. Otherwise, you’re just going to become another Starcastle…at best.
