Article Writing Tips – Knowing When You Can Be Offensive
Filed under: Article Writing; Tagged as: Article Writing, tips on article writing, writing an articleNo CommentsNot every article ever written was sugar and spice and everything nice. There have been some articles written over the years that have been quite risque, to say the least. And that’s all well and good. However, you need to know, as an article writer, when you can cross that line and when you have to hold back. There is an art to it and it doesn’t come easy. This article is going to explain.
Let’s take this article as an example. Who is this article reaching? Well, it’s reaching people who want to know a little bit about how to write. That encompasses a lot of folk. Think maybe there aren’t some sweet little old ladies who aren’t reading this who wouldn’t be offended by even the most mild swear word? Think again. I have had people unsubscribe from my list because I used the “D” word. You have to be very careful when you’re addressing a mixed audience.
And that is essentially what you have to be aware of every time you write something. Who is it reaching? If you’re writing an article on telling off color jokes at a roast, then you have to assume that the people reading that article are interested in learning the craft and thus will probably not be offended at anything that you could possibly put in print. On the other hand, if you’re writing an article on how to grow a better garden, I think it would be safe to assume that while maybe some of those people could have vocabularies similar to a truck driver, many are probably pretty middle of the road or even conservative. So you’re not going to use words in that article that might stir the pot, so to speak.
Lots of people might say, this is just common sense. But not really. Many people grow up in very open and liberal homes and speak in ways that maybe you and I would never engage in publicly. For them, it’s perfectly natural and therefore, they’d use words in articles that we might find offensive. So common sense doesn’t apply here. You have to know your audience but you also have to know what words are and aren’t accepted in everyday print. That’s something that takes a little research. And trust me, there are many gray areas here.
If you’re going to write articles, know your audience and know what’s generally accepted among the conservative crowd. You’ll find that is the best approach.
