Article Writing Tips – M is For Mystery
Filed under: Article Writing; Tagged as: Article Writing, tips on article writing, writing an articleNo CommentsWell, we’re about half way through our article writing A-Z series with the letter M up for grabs today. M stands for mystery. Do you like mysteries? I know I do. I think everybody likes a little mystery from time to time. It keeps things interesting. So, just how do you weave a little mystery into your article writing? This article is going to show you. So pay attention.
The best way to add some mystery to your article is by asking questions. And there is no better place to start asking questions than with the title of your article. For example, let’s say you want to warn somebody about certain things that, if they do when it comes to marketing, could turn their business into a disaster. You might come up with a title like “Are You Making These 3 Deadly Marketing Mistakes?” See how that adds mystery to the article? Readers are going to immediately wonder what those mistakes are and if they’re making them. Boy you know, that title is so good, I just might use it for a future article.
Another way to add mystery to your article is by revealing things in the article just a little bit at a time, taking breaks between each revelation. For example, let’s take that same article from above. After revealing the first mistake, I might give an actual example of the mistake that I or a friend made. This keeps readers hanging on because they’re going to want to find out what the next big mistake is, but also, it keeps them hanging on because by illustrating the mistake in action, it really drives the point home. This makes them hope that the next two mistakes will also be illustrated. But will they? That’s the mystery. They don’t know.
You can also add mystery to your article by getting away from the topic for just a bit. Tell a story that’s related in a way, but not really crucial to the plot of the article. If it’s an interesting one, the reader will stay tuned…all the while wondering what’s coming next. If you mix things up, don’t become predictable, and then throw in something totally unexpected, the mystery builds.
There are other ways to add mystery to the article, but I’m going to let you figure them out for yourself. Ah see, I just did it. I alluded to something else but told you that I’m going to let you guess what it was. If I had ended the article just before the above sentence, you’d be wondering…what other ways are there? And then, I’d finish the article with something like, “If you don’t figure it out by next week, I’ll reveal the answer then.” See? Now THAT’S mystery.
