Article Writing Tips – Mapping Out Your Article
Filed under: Article Writing; Tagged as: Article Writing, tips on article writing, writing an articleNo CommentsSome people, when it comes to writing an article, just don’t know where to begin. They sit in front of the keyboard with a blank stare on their face and just go into a daze. It’s more common than you think. And it has nothing to do with writers block. It has to do with not knowing where to start when you’re so overloaded with wonderful info to share. What I find helps me when I’m confronted with such an article (like when I write about music) is mapping out the article before I write it. This article will explain what I mean and show exactly how I do it.
The best way to explain mapping out an article is to compare it to something else that I used to do when I was a computer programmer, back in the days before I even know the Internet existed. When writing a program, I would first create a flowchart of how the information was to be processed. This way, I didn’t miss any of the actual steps in writing the program because it was all mapped out in front of me in the flowchart. Well, mapping out an article is very similar. Let me show you how by giving you an example.
Let’s say I’m writing an article on how to write a song. There are many parts to actually writing a song and it’s important to keep everything organized. So what I would do is make a checklist of what’s involved. I would make sure I list the steps in order of importance, or, what comes first, second, third and so on. I wouldn’t write any actual info for each step. I would just list them. So, in this example for song writing, I’d have a list something like this…
-Pick Subject Matter
-Pick Style Of Song
-Think Of Title
-Write Lyrics
-Write Melody
-Write ArrangementAnd then for each part listed above, I would then break them down into sub topics. For example, for the write lyrics part I might have…
-Pick Lyric Structure (AAB, ABA, etc.)
-Pick Rhyme SchemeAnd so on.
By doing this, you essentially have your whole article mapped out before you write it. Then, all you have to do is fill in the actual words for each part.
Try this method sometime when you have a lot to write about. You just might find that it helps you write a better and more structured article in the process.
