Article Writing Tips – O is For Originality and Organization

My friend Dean from Texas writes, “NO way in heck are you going to get through this whole series.” Well Dean, you’re on. In the meantime, we’re up to the letter O in our article writing tips series. In this installment, we’re going to tackle two items, originality and organization…two things sorely lacking in many articles. So pay attention, because this is a very important installment in this series.

Let’s start with organization first. Know what drives me crazier than anything when I read an article? Starting with one thought and then, out of left field, another thought pops into the picture. It’s like, “Where did THAT come from?” Way too many article writers simply ramble on and on and have no idea where they’re going with their article. The reason is simple…they don’t organize their thoughts beforehand. The best way to do this, and also another “O” word, is with an outline. Simply write out an outline of what you’re going to discuss in your article BEFORE you start writing. Isn’t that easy? I knew you’d think so.

Okay, let’s move on to originality because this is the one that is much harder to come by for most article writers. Part of the problem is with the choice of subject matter. Some topics lock you into to simply reporting dull facts, such as if you were writing an article about some drug and what it does to the body. Yeah, this kind of stuff can get really old and boring. Just take a look at some of the drug facts articles around the Internet and you’ll see what I mean. So how do we get around this?

Well, the easiest way is to pick topics that allow more self expression. But if you can’t do that (you absolutely have to write that drug article, and hopefully NOT in a drug induced state) then a very easy way to add some originality to it is to add commentary to the article itself. In other words, after you’ve reported some dull fact like, “Drug XYX when taken in large doses can cause paralysis” why not add a comment at the end of the statement? Maybe something like, “So avoid taking if you’re planning on getting into a barroom brawl in the middle of the night.” Okay, that was a little corny, but you get the idea. Adding some color to your fact is a great way to keep the reader’s attention.

Does it take practice? Yes, lots of it. But the only way you get good at anything is by practicing.

Work on your organization skills and adding some originality to your articles and you’ll gain yourself some readers who will be with you for a very long time to come.

Provided they haven’t taken that XYZ drug and have become paralyzed as a result.

    To YOUR Success,
