I’ve been writing tips on writing articles for a long time now, but this may sound like the strangest tip of all. Know what it is? After you’re finished writing your article, read it back…out loud. Why am I saying this? Well, keep reading and you’ll understand why this one activity is so important.

The human mind, as well as the human ear, is an odd thing. It doesn’t behave the way we expect. Let me ask you a question. Have you ever tried to do an impersonation of a famous person, like maybe Richard Nixon or Boris Karloff? It sounds great when you do it in your head. But then when you say the words out loud and listen to them back (assuming you’ve recorded yourself) it doesn’t sound very much like who you were trying to imitate. That’s because what we hear in our head is never the same as what it actually sounds like.

The same is true with writing articles. As we are writing, everything sounds so good. We think we’ve written the absolute masterpiece. But if you ever took the time to actually read back what you’ve written, you’d find more than one part that had some faults to it. In fact, some parts would sound downright dreadful. You would never have known that unless you took the time to read it back.

Well, guess what? When somebody reads YOUR article, they’re not hearing in their head what you heard in your head. They’re hearing something completely different. And sometimes, that difference can turn a good article into a real mess. That is why it is CRITICAL that you read your article back out loud to give yourself the best chance of coming up with something that will actually sound good in the reader’s ear. Otherwise, you stand a good chance of having that article abandoned in mid stream.

So while it may sound like a tedious chore, read your article back and record it when you do. That way you can actually listen to it to see how it sounds.

You just might be surprised at what you hear.
