Article Writing Tips – Talent Can’t Be Learned Can It?
Filed under: Article Writing; Tagged as: Article Writing, tips on article writing, writing an articleNo CommentsThis may be the most honest and hard hitting article on article writing that you have ever read. If you have a difficult time handling cold hard truth, you might not want to read this. I am not going to sugarcoat anything for you but give it to you straight from the hip. Let’s begin.
I make no secret that I sell books on how to write articles. However, let me be perfectly honest with you. I can’t turn you into a great writer. Sure, I can show you techniques for coming up with titles, content, closings and resource boxes, but I can’t put the words into your mouth for the particular niche that you’re writing about.
See, for an article writing book to be effective, it has to be generic. In other words, the principles have to work for any niche. Are we in agreement there? Good, I hope so or we’ll never get through the rest of this. Now, given that fact, it is impossible for any book to give examples of writing for all niches. Maybe a book can have a few examples, maybe focusing on health, debt and entertainment. But when it comes to the actual specifics of what YOU are writing about…you’re on your own. You have to take the principles and apply them to YOUR niche.
That is where the problem comes in. The English language has millions of words. These words can be combined in an almost infinite number of ways. For example, let’s just take something as simple as a title. A title will usually be about 7 to 10 words, give or take a couple. Imagine you’re writing an article on the New York Yankees bid for another world series ring. How many titles could you come up with?
Here are a few of mine.
Yankees Shoot For Number 27
Yankees Go For 27th World Series Title
Yankees Aim To Make it 27I could keep going but I think you get the point. Think I couldn’t easily come up with 100 different titles for this article? Think some won’t be better than others? How do I know which one will be the best choice? Well, as you write more and more, you get a feel for it. But the point is, you have to have the talent for thinking of these titles, and trust me…the three above all stink.
Why?
Because they don’t really generate any interest.
Now, something like this might.
Will Yankees Go Down Swinging Shooting For Number 27?
The reason it’s a better title is because it asks a question and when people are confronted with questions, they can’t help but want to know the answers. Their curiosity gets the better of them.
That’s what a great title does. It makes the potential reader curious enough to want to read the article.
And all the training in the world isn’t going to make you come up with titles like these. Your own mind, your own talent…that’s what is going to do it.
So now, let’s answer the question that this article has raised.
Can talent be learned?
The answer is, and mind you this is only my opinion, talent can be developed but not learned.
In other words, you can’t become a talented writer just from reading a book. You have to actually write in order to develop that talent.
Will there be people who will never develop enough talent to become a decent writer, let alone a great one?
I don’t think that question even needs to be answered.
So, if you are expecting to purchase a book on article writing and have it turn you into a great writer, save your money. However, if you realize that with a lot of hard work and regular writing, you’ve got a shot at becoming a decent writer, then by all means, get some training.
It can’t hurt.
To YOUR Success,
