Article Writing Tips – W is For Why?
Filed under: Article Writing; Tagged as: Article Writing, tips on article writing, writing an articleNo CommentsWe have only three more installments of my article writing tips, A-Z, after this one. Bet you thought I’d never make it this far. Anyway, this installment covers the letter W which stands for “why?” Yes, why are you writing that article in the first place? Think it doesn’t matter? Think again. The reason for writing your article will greatly influence HOW you write it. Don’t worry…I’m going to explain.
First off, we need to understand that there are numerous reasons for writing articles. Some of them are totally unselfish, other than to satisfy our need to write and others are a little more self serving. There is nothing wrong with that as long as the writing is honest and provides value. Remember the letter V? If not, maybe you should go back and read THAT article because without value, the “why” doesn’t matter.
To clearly demonstrate how important the “why” is, let’s take a hypothetical example. Let’s say that we’re writing an article on affiliate marketing. Our main purpose is to do nothing but inform the reader on some aspect of affiliate marketing. We have no ulterior motive. We’re not looking for any opt in or sale or anything like that. In this case, the more info we give in the article, the more the reader will get out of it. Now, there is a downside to this which you must be aware of.
If you give the reader TOO much info, they could become overloaded and end up getting nothing from the article because there was just too much to absorb. Of course this will depend on what the reader wants to get out of it, how much time they want to put into it and how familiar they are with the subject already. But chances are, if your intention is to write an article that could easily be a book (I’ve suffered through those) you might be better off actually writing the book.
However, if your intent is to try to sell a product of yours at the end of the article, then naturally you don’t want to give away too much information, at least not so much that purchasing the product isn’t necessary. Plus, if you’re writing an article about somebody else’s product and include info that you have no rights to share, you could be leaving yourself open for some legal trouble.
Point is, you need to sit down and decide what it is you want the reader to do after they are done reading your article. The example of too much or too little info is just one piece of the puzzle. There is also the issue of how technical you want the article to be. Is it going to be read by experts in the field? If so, then be as technical as you want. However, if it’s going to be read by people who might be interested in the subject but know little about it, then you need to write more simply.
Knowing why you’re writing your article in the first place will make the actual writing of it a whole lot easier.
To YOUR Success,
