Article Writing Tips – When You’re All Burnt Out

I’ve been writing articles for longer than I care to admit. And believe it or not, I too get burnt out. As a matter of fact, after taking some time off for my 25th anniversary, I didn’t think I could write another word when I get back. I was really spent. So what do you do when this happens? Well, I can tell you what I did and what I have done at other times when this has happened to me.

Probably the most important thing is to take a deep breath and relax. When you’re burnt out and HAVE to write something, what happens is you end up putting more stress on yourself. You need to get something written, can’t do it, and end up pressing that much harder. This is only going to make matters worse. You need to take a step back and forget about writing for just a few minutes. Clear your mind and pretend that you’re going to be writing for the very first time. No, it’s not the cure all, but it’s the start that you need.

After you’ve done that, think about what it is you have to write about. It’s either a subject that you know very well or one that you have to research. If it’s one you have to research, go ahead and do it. Read as much as you can about the subject. You can even mention in your article that you read so and so in such and such a publication and relay what it is you read. Give you opinion on it. Certainly you have some kind of opinion. Everybody does. Opinions are the easiest things to write. Start with those.

Finally, make a list of all the possible things you could write about in regard to your topic. For example, let’s say you get asked to write an article on bowling. There are so many angles you can take on the subject. You could write about the history of the game. You could write about the great pro bowlers of all time. You could write about just ONE particular bowler. You could write an article on the rules of the game. You could write an instructional article such as how to throw a hook. You could write about how to choose a bowling ball. As you can see, there are MANY sub topics to choose from. By going from the broad to the specific, you should have no trouble coming up with something to write.

We all get burnt out…even me. But if you go about this in a methodical way, you’ll find that you can easily get through the process.
