It would be nice if everything we wrote about was all sugar and spice and everything nice. Unfortunately, some issues are quite volatile. I’ve read articles on some blogs that attracted hundreds, if not thousands of comments. I’m talking about some pretty racy stuff here. So how do we go about writing on such topics? Do we come out with all guns blazing or do we have to use a little bit of tact? Well, the answer to that question really depends on the desired end result. This article explains.

Let’s say we want to write about the outrage of war. For starters, what do we want to accomplish? Do we want to get people all fired up about it so that they write to their congressmen to get our troops out of wherever they might be? If so, they when probably want to come out with all guns blazing. Not only show a lot of horrible examples but add our own personal misery to the mix, if we have a story to tell. The more passionate we get about it, the more worked up we’ll get our readers.

But what if all we want to do is make them aware of some of the atrocities of war but don’t want to get them all riled up so that we have a riot on our hands? In that case, you simply report the facts and make sure that the numbers can be verified. You don’t want to report anything that can be disputed it argued. In this case, you are nothing more than a reporter. Your article probably won’t generate the buzz of the first one, but at least you won’t have to worry about any death threats.

Bottom line is this…you have to decide what it is you want to communicate to the reader. Is it the facts or is it your personal outrage? There is nothing wrong with opinion pieces, but understand that when you write them, there is going to be somebody on the other end who will have a different opinion.

And we all know where that leads.
