Article Writing Tips – Writing For Directories

I consider myself an excellent writer. I never write an article that I think is going to be rejected by any article directory. Guess what? It happens. No matter how good I think the article is, some WILL get rejected. But why? This article is going to go over some of the common and not so common reasons why articles get rejected by directories. Some are very annoying, but ultimately, it’s the editorial decision of the directory itself. Don’t like it? Write for somebody else. Let’s now get to the reasons.

Let’s start with the more common reasons articles get rejected. These would be things like article length, spelling and grammar. I don’t care how great the actual content of the article is. If the article doesn’t meet a specific length required by that directory, your article will be rejected. Article length requirements vary from directory to directory. Most are at least a minimum of 250 words. Some are 400 and up. You have to read the TOS of the directory itself to find this out.

As for spelling and grammar, let’s face it. The directory doesn’t want people who read the articles to think that they hire hack writers. Bad grammar and poor spelling is a reflection on the service that the article directory provides. Personally, I have no sympathy for somebody who says, “But English isn’t my first language” or “But they know what I’m trying to say.” Word processors all have spelling and grammar checks. I strongly suggest that you use them.

Okay, these are the common reasons why articles get rejected, but then there are the not so common and obvious reasons and these are the ones that get most article writers all worked up, even me. I have come to learn to live with this and I suggest you do too.

At the top of the list is editorial policy. In other words, there are some things that some article directories just will not publish. Either they find the material is too controversial, too sales oriented, too explicit in language or whatever. In these cases, there are no specific rules (usually) that spell out what types of articles will be rejected. You usually just have to submit them and take your chances. And that’s what’s frustrating about the whole process is that it is all very subjective.

So, in order to keep yourself from getting all worked up about this, my rule of thumb is simple. If after writing your article you think there is any possibility that it might be rejected and don’t want to start throwing furniture around the room, don’t submit it. In fact, before you even write it, if you think it’s going to cause a problem, don’t write it. Either that or write it and put it on your own blog.

Here is the bottom line article writers. The directories are not democracies. They can accept or reject any articles they like and don’t have to give you a reason, though most will so you know for the future what you can submit and can’t submit. You therefore have two choices. You can deal with this and use the services of that directory or you can go someplace else.

If more people would take that simple attitude about their writing, we’d have fewer writers with ulcers.
