Article Writing Tips – You’re Not Fooling Anybody
Filed under: Article Writing; Tagged as: Article Writing, tips on article writing, writing an articleDid you ever read an article and say to yourself afterwards, "This guy has no idea what he's talking about" and walk away scratching your head in wonder? I have, and I'm sure you have as well. Ultimately, my reaction was that this person was trying to fool us into thinking that he knows his subject when it's clear he doesn't. No...he's not fooling anybody. What about you? When you write about certain topics, do you REALLY know your stuff? If not, trust me, you're not fooling anybody. Let me explain why. There is a very big difference between the writings of somebody who is knowledgeable about a topic and one who just read a few articles or whatever and then tries to make us think that they're an expert on the subject. For some people, the difference is subtle. However, if you're an expert on the subject yourself, you can spot them in a heartbeat. See, what most people don't realize about writing, especially writing on subjects that require some kind of knowledge, is that the folks who really know their stuff, the ones who live this topic day in and day out, when they write, there is a passion to their writing. There is usually a mix of personal commentary along with the facts that makes the reader believe that they are an expert in this area. You can just tell that this isn't something that they swallowed from a dictionary or encyclopedia. For example, let's say I was writing about the Beatles. My goodness, I grew up with this group. I remember seeing them on Ed Sullivan, watching them in my living room at age 6, in front of my mom's console TV, sitting right there on the living room floor...glued to the screen. Somebody who is just reporting the facts that the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan couldn't possibly go into that kind of detail. So what's the answer? What do you do if you want to write about something that you're not really an expert on? Well, for one thing, don't try to pass yourself off as an expert. Be honest with your reader. Let them know that you've researched the topic and according to your findings this is what you've learned. Point them to sources written by experts where they can get more info. Trust me, they'll have a lot more respect for you if you're just honest about it. You're not fooling anybody...So don't try.
