Copywriting Tips – Being Firm With Your Clients
Filed under: Copywriting; Tagged as: Copywriting, copywriting course, Copywriting tips, copywriting tips for beginners, learn copywritingNo CommentsIt’s not all about the money. Yes, as copywriters, we want to be paid what we are worth. However, there is more to taking on a copywriting client than just setting a price for your services. There are many other items that need to be attended to and many beginning copywriters don’t even give these a second thought. So, in this article, I am going to go over a few of the items that you should cover with all your clients to make sure that you’re on the same page. Failure to do these can lead to a lot of trouble.
The first thing is the product itself. A lot of clients will just expect you to write their copy based on the description of the product. This is not going to give them good salescopy. You need to tell them that they have to provide you with a copy of their product and all bonuses so that you can do a proper job. You need to explain to them that a lot of the copy itself is going to come from the product. Some product creators will be reluctant to hand over their product to you because they are afraid that you’ll steal it from them. It is your job to assure them that this isn’t going to happen.
The next thing is testimonials. This is one of the biggest problems. Most new products don’t have any testimonials because they are new, obviously. And the first thing the creator is going to say to you is that he doesn’t have any because he hasn’t sold any yet. Well, this is where you have to tell him that he needs to give away a few copies in order to get some testimonials. Otherwise, the sales letter is not going to have what it needs to get the job done. The creator may be reluctant to do this because he’s not thrilled about giving away his product. Explain to him that this is a normal course of events with a new product.
Okay, let’s get to the price for your services. This is where you REALLY have to stand firm. Clients are going to constantly try to get you to give them a break. They’ll even go as far as saying to you that they’ll have to go elsewhere. Fine…let them. Your time is valuable and you’re not going to do a sales letter for peanuts. You’ll get more respect from people by being firm than by caving in and constantly giving discounts.
If you follow the above tips, you will gain a ton of respect as a copywriter.
