Copywriting Tips – Buy Now Buttons

I can’t believe the debates that go on over some things related to copywriting. Some of it is downright crazy. I’m not saying that these things aren’t important because they are, but eventually you can get to the point where you’re nit picking over the smallest things. Well, this article is going to tackle one of those topics that seems to have copywriters battling it out over what’s right and what’s wrong. I am not going to take any sides in this debate but just present both sides of the coin. Well, actually ALL sides. This is a multi-sided coin.

Let’s start with the school that says that buy now buttons should be tossed in the trash altogether. Their feeling is that your buy now buttons should actually be links…plain blue hyperlinks. Sounds kind of, well, plain…doesn’t it? Well, the reasoning behind this is that buy now buttons make your sales copy look cheap and unprofessional and most people use buy now buttons that look like garbage to begin with. Actually, I can’t argue with that, though I have seen some that are really sharp.

The other school of thought says that if you’re going to use a buy now button, you want it to be as fancy and eye catching as possible so as to attract the prospect to the button so that they will click on it and make their purchase. Plus, you want the link to pay with to be something that they can see. You don’t want people to have to hunt for it. Sounds like good advice to me.

Then there is another school of thought that says your buy now button should be very plain and not even use the word “buy” but some other word like “download”. The theory behind this is that you don’t want to remind your prospect that he is actually buying anything at all. This also sounds like good advice.

Is it possible that all of the above can work? Well, let me tell you from my own experience using all three of these methods…they all work. I haven’t noticed any decrease or increase in sales using any of the three methods, though I will admit that I do tend to stay away from the word “buy” more often than not. I certainly don’t use it in my sales copy.

If you want the definitive answer to this dilemma, here it is…test. That’s right. Use all the above three methods and see what works best for you. Ultimately you might find out that it doesn’t really make that much difference what method you do use.
