There has been a lot of talk lately about negative salescopy. I personally don’t like it. But my personal opinions aren’t important. What’s important is if negative copy can bring positive results. Well, the short answer is yes. And I guess I could just leave it at that. But then if I did, this wouldn’t be much of an article. So I’m going to explain why negative copy can bring positive results. Please note, I do not approve of using these tactics, but to each his own.

The particular kind of copy I’m talking about is where copywriters ask the question “Is This A Scam?” in their sales letters. This brings immediate attention to the letter. But why does it? That’s the question that needs to be answered and understood if you’re going to understand how to use these tactics in your sales pitch. Using them incorrectly could backfire seriously on you. So you need to be prepared for possible backlash.

People love train wrecks. Nobody is going to pay any attention to an old lady sitting on a park bench feeding the birds, but show them a four car collision on the Interstate and they’ll be backed up for miles on the other side trying to get a look. It’s the same thing with a sales letter. Just mention the word “scam” and people will be reading the pitch just to see if it is or not. It doesn’t matter if it’s used simply to get people to read. And therein lies the problem.

If you trick people into thinking that something is a scam, they are going to resent you for it. In most cases, they won’t buy from you. Sure, you may get them to read the copy, but getting them to buy is going to be tricky unless you are very clever about this approach.

So if you’re thinking of using negative copy, please understand that there could be repercussions.
