Copywriting Tips – Choosing A Template
Filed under: Copywriting; Tagged as: Copywriting, copywriting course, Copywriting tips, copywriting tips for beginners, learn copywritingNo CommentsA lot of people think that choosing a template has nothing to do with writing sales copy. Well, in a sense it has everything to do with how it is perceived. There is an old saying that presentation is everything. It is quite true…and by providing you with the outrageous example that’s to follow, you will understand why the template that you choose for it is so critical.
Imagine this sales copy. A site for a natural cure for cancer. It’s written by a well known doctor in the field. There are testimonials from cancer survivors long enough to choke a horse. There is an amazing story and copy so well crafted that you know it couldn’t have been written by any doctor, but still you’re not going to nit pick about little things like that. Point is…everything about this copy is perfect…right down to the call to action and the order button. Except there is one problem. The copy is written against a background of psychedelic rainbow colors with smiley faces and clown faces surrounding the border. Do you REALLY think anybody is going to take this copy seriously?
Okay, the above example is a gross exaggeration. Nobody is going to be so stupid as to write sales copy using a template that looks like it came out of a circus. However, not all templates look professionally made, even if they don’t scream out “Bozo’s Big Top.” And an unprofessional template is going to ruin your sales copy…plain and simple.
But why? Why should it matter? I mean aren’t people really just interested in the copy? Well, yes and no. See, environment is very important, not just for this, but for everything in life. Imagine you walk into what is supposed to be a very fancy restaurant with the best food in town and the place looks like it was part of the Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre. Do you REALLY think you’re going to want to eat there? Point is, an unprofessional template is going to detract from your copy and as a result, the copy itself will be rendered less effective.
So when choosing a template, to be on the safe side, choose one that isn’t too fancy. You don’t want it to detract from the copy itself, but add to it…subtly. It’s a fine art and one that takes some time to perfect. Best advice I can give you is to look at the top selling items at the Clickbank marketplace and see what templates these people are using. They’re professional but not detracting to the copy.
