Copywriting Tips – Conforming to Regulations
Filed under: Copywriting; Tagged as: Copywriting, copywriting course, Copywriting tips, copywriting tips for beginners, learn copywritingNo CommentsAs copywriters, we try our absolute hardest to come up with the best copy possible. We want to make those sales pages sizzle so that prospects will come buying in droves. Let’s be honest…that’s our job. Well, with the FTC cracking down on a lot of the junk that’s out there (such as hidden forced continuity) it’s getting harder and harder to write a sales page that’s going to get the job done. Regulations have taken away a lot of what we can do. This article will touch on a big one.
The big thing today is testimonials. In a nutshell, when you place a testimonial on your sales page, it is no longer sufficient to say that these results are atypical. You now have to reveal what the typical results for the average person are. Otherwise, you could find yourself in a ton of hot water with the feds.
Okay, this brings up quite a logistical problem. For one thing, where are we supposed to get these stats from? When I sell any of my products, I don’t contact every person who purchases from me to find out how they’re doing with it. I’d be writing letters all day. Conversely, very few of these people email me out of the blue to tell me how much money they’ve made. So getting this kind of information is going to be a logistical nightmare to say the least.
As copywriters, we now have to be extremely responsible with what we put on a sales page. And this applies not only to testimonials but also to any claims we make on the sales page itself. For example, if we have a headline that says something like, “Truck Driver Banks $30,000 In 60 Days”, we have to, somewhere on the page, show what the typical person earns with the product.
It’s going to be interesting to see what this regulation actually does to the industry itself. However, if you write salescopy that is honest, without all the hype that is essentially killing this industry, you shouldn’t have any problems.
