Copywriting Tips – Fine Line Between Truth And Truth
Filed under: Copywriting; Tagged as: Copywriting, copywriting course, Copywriting tips, copywriting tips for beginners, learn copywritingNo CommentsI know I’ve come up with some strange article titles before but this one may just have you scratching your head wondering if I’ve lost my marbles. Don’t I mean the fine line between truth and lies? No, I mean what I said in the title. Okay, so what exactly does that mean? Well, keep reading and you’ll discover one of the trickiest parts about being a copywriter.
I am quite sure that you have read sales copy, especially in the niche of making money online. Have you ever read some of the claims before affiliate programs started cracking down on some of the blatant lies that people tell on their pages. I’ve read more than my share of them and it was all I could do to keep from getting violently ill. But that’s not the point of this article. I’m not here to pass judgment on others. However, there is a way to write copy that still sells, is honest, without being too honest. What am I talking about? That’s the fine line between truth and truth that I am referring to.
The best way to explain it is with an example. Let’s say you’re writing copy for a sales page that promotes a make money product and on it you have the following line. “This process will require you to put in an enormous amount of work…maybe even up to 14 hours a day. It will be about 3 or 4 months before you start to see a significant income.” Do you think this person is going to get many sales? I would think not. Sadly, not many people want to put in a lot of work into something.
Now, imagine that we replace that line with this one. “This process does require work. But if you’re willing to put in the time and effort…over time you will begin to see significant results from your efforts.” Both lines are the truth. The difference is that the second line paints the truth in a more palatable manner. Less people will be turned off by it. Will you still lose some sales to those who are looking for a quick buck? Probably, but I think you’ll be able to sleep better at night for it. Or maybe not.
There is indeed a very fine line between truth and truth. The expert writers, who still insist that they don’t lose their soul in the process of writing killer copy, know how to walk that fine line to perfection.
