Copywriting Tips – Getting Your Very First Copywriting Gig

Breaking into copywriting, even if you’re a darn good writer, is tough. The reason is simple. Prospective clients want to know that you’re capable of doing the job for them. In order to do that, you have to show them proof. But how can you do that when you’re first breaking into the business? There’s no proof to show yet. Ultimately, this is the classic catch 22 situation. Well, this article is going to show you how to get around that catch 22 the quickest and best way possible.

The first thing you want to do is hang out at forums where marketers hang out. Why marketers? Because marketers need sales letters to sell their products. It doesn’t matter what the product is either. They need some vehicle to sell it. And, in the case of beginning marketers, they don’t have a lot of money to spend on sales copy. This is how you break in…by offering your services at rock bottom prices.

Okay, you’re probably thinking why these marketers would want your services, somebody who’s just starting out, instead of one of the big boys. Well, like I said, they don’t have a lot of money and the big boys charge some big money for their work. So somebody starting out in marketing is going to look for a bargain when it comes to a sales letter.

This is where you have to shine and really show your stuff. You don’t get many chances in this business so if you write a sales letter that bombs out, you may not get another chance. News gets around fast and news of your goose egg is going to travel faster than the speed of light. But if you know you’re stuff, you’ll do okay.

Then, after you get the job and the sales letter performs well, you get a testimonial from your customer. And you keep accumulating these testimonials as you do more and more sales letters. Gradually, as you build a reputation, you’ll be able to charge more for your services.

It’s not an overnight process, and you have to really make sure you know your stuff before you even begin to take on clients.
