Copywriting Tips – I is For Interest

In the world of copywriting, you literally have just a few seconds to get a prospect’s attention and only slightly more time to keep their interest. If you don’t keep their interest, they’re gone…plain and simple. So, how do you keep a prospect’s interest in your sales letter? This article is going to offer some insights into this part of the AIDA principle.

Okay, so how do you get somebody interested in what you have to say in your copy? Well, one way is by telling your story. People love stories. And if you have any interesting one, trust me…they’ll be hanging on your every word. Sure, you have to be a bit of a yarn spinner, but after all…you ARE a copywriter, right? So this shouldn’t be any trouble for you. Just be yourself and tell your story. If it’s compelling, your prospects will read it all the way through to the end.

Another way to get their interest is by telling them that you have a secret to share with them but not right away. Then lead up to the secret. This can be another type of story such as how you discovered the secret or what you did before you discovered the secret. You want to keep them hanging on until you actually reach the point of the copy where you reveal the secret. Sure, it’s a ploy, but it works. People love being let in on secrets. It makes them feel special.

One thing you want to make sure of is that whatever you write, you want one thing to seamlessly flow into the next. The story has to be smooth and build up…almost like writing a novel. I always believed that many novel writers, especially fiction novel writers, can write great salescopy if they wanted to.

The bottom line is this. If your sales letter is dull and lifeless, if it doesn’t tell some kind of compelling story, or promise some great revelation down the road, your prospects are going to leave. You can have the greatest offer in the world, but if it hurts too much to get to it, you’ll never sell a thing.
