    Copywriting Tips – Nice Graphics, Ugly Graphics Or No Graphics?

    Filed under: Copywriting;

    As a copywriter, this is a question I get asked a lot. “Do graphics on a sales page matter?” Well, the answer isn’t as simple as many people would like to believe. I have done quite a bit of testing in this area and the results I’ve gotten have been quite surprising. I’m going to share what I’ve discovered in this article. Take what you want from it. Naturally, you will want to do your own testing as well.

    My very first sales page had the most God awful looking graphics on it. At the very top of the page was a cheesy Stop sign. It didn’t get any worse than that. The ecover I started with was atrocious. It looked like it had been made by a five year old. The buy now button was hand made by me in an old Paint Shop Pro version 4 program. Okay, can you say ugly with a capital “U”? The graphics on this sales page couldn’t have looked any worse.

    That product went on to sell 200 copies per month for almost a year. Why? Well, you have to understand who your target market is when you write a sales letter. The truth is, some markets response better to sales letters that aren’t so polished because they look more honest. I know it sounds crazy, but for certain marketers, the slicker the sales page, the fewer the sales. There is a lot of distrust out there. So if you come across as a regular guy, in some cases, you WILL make MORE sales…not less.

    Having said that, in almost all my other tests, better looking graphics, especially when it comes to ecovers, to make for more sales, but again, not always. But what about a sales page with no graphics at all, just text? Well, I have found that even a sales page with ugly graphics outperforms a sales page with no graphics. I don’t know why this is, but that is what I have discovered. I guess people want to hang onto anything that they can that makes the product look more real.

    Bottom line is this. There is no right or wrong here. You have to test your own sales pages and see what works best for you. Some of my results have more than surprised the heck out of me.
