Copywriting Tips – Sizing Down Your Testimonials
Filed under: Copywriting; Tagged as: Copywriting, copywriting course, Copywriting tips, copywriting tips for beginners, learn copywritingNo CommentsTestimonials are great, but sometimes they can be too great. If you’re wondering how that can be, you’re probably not alone. But trust me, you can end up with testimonials that are just too good and ultimately end up weakening your copy. Don’t worry, I’m going to explain exactly what I’m talking about because I am speaking from experience. It’s the curse of coming out with really great products.
I got a testimonial from a guy who purchased one of my products. It was amazing. It was also about five paragraphs long. My goodness, what was I going to do with this monster? Now, I know a lot of you beginning copywriters would probably die for such a great testimonial, but you’d be making a big mistake if you did. See, testimonials are meant to compliment your sales copy…not overshadow it.
What do I mean? Well, let’s say you put up a really long testimonial and the prospect begins reading it. Eventually, you know what’s going to happen? He’s going to forget why he went to the page in the first place and what you were telling him before he got to the testimonial that ended up distracting him. Now he’s lost his train of thought and the groove has been broken.
Okay, so what’s the solution? Well, it’s simple. You want your testimonials to be like sound bites. They should compliment the copy, not overshadow it. You still want them to be powerful, but they don’t have to be novels to be great. You can get a great testimonial in one or two short paragraphs with no problem. It’s kind of like writing a great headline and a subhead. That’s all you need.
So how do you turn a five paragraph testimonial into two paragraphs? It’s really not hard. Pull out the meat of the testimonial or the main points. Then, send the edited testimonial to the person who sent it to your for his or her approval. This shouldn’t be much of a problem. Most people who give testimonials are more concerned with their own exposure.
By keeping your testimonials short and focused on the main points, you run less of a risk of losing your prospect because he’s forgotten what your offer was about. When that happens, no testimonial in the world is going to save the sale.
