Copywriting Tips – The Killer Intro
Filed under: Copywriting; Tagged as: Copywriting, copywriting course, Copywriting tips, copywriting tips for beginners, learn copywritingNo CommentsDid you ever see those movies where the very first scene you’re greeted to a shot of a man aiming a high powered rifle out of a seventeen story window, pointing it into a crowd of people and then suddenly a shot goes off and instead of an innocent victim in the crowd meeting his maker, the would-be assassin is falling out of the window onto the concrete below? Well, I’ve never seen a movie like that yet, but wouldn’t that be a killer intro? Certainly it would get your attention right away and make you want to see what’s coming next, wouldn’t it?
Well, writing sales copy is kind of like that. When you first start the main text of your copy (after you’ve hit them over the head with your killer headline) you want to grab their attention right away. You want to present them with an opening to a story, or whatever tact you’re using, that is going to make them want to read what’s coming next.
For example, let’s say I have a headline for a “make money online” product that goes something like this…
“Truck Driver Earns $24,175.98 His FIRST Month Online!”
What would you follow a headline like that up with? I hate to say this, but many beginning copywriters start out with something like “Dear Marketer.” Trust me, not even Michel Fortin does this anymore and he’s about the best in the business. No, you want to follow up that headline with something that is going to grab the prospect’s attention.
Maybe something like this…
“If I could show you a way to easily, and on autopilot, make THOUSANDS of dollars EACH MONTH…would that be worth 5 minutes of your time?”
Okay, why is this a killer intro? Well, for starters, you telling the prospect that what you’re going to show him is easy. You’re also telling him that he can do this on autopilot, meaning it runs by itself. You’re also telling him that he can make thousands of dollars each month, and finally, you’re telling him that to find out how to do this will only take five minutes of his time. Think somebody isn’t going to at least read the next paragraph?
This is the power of the killer intro. It captures the reader’s attention so that they’ll read what follows. It’s really that simple.
