Copywriting Tips – The Long And Short Of It
Filed under: Copywriting; Tagged as: Copywriting, copywriting course, Copywriting tips, copywriting tips for beginners, learn copywritingNo CommentsThe argument between long and short salescopy will probably go on until the end of time. Well, it’s time to set the record straight on this subject once and for all. This article is going to give you the real truth about salescopy length and whether or not it really matters. Some may not agree with this, and that’s fine. Like I said…the argument will go on forever.
Okay, so just what is the real deal? What wins, long or short copy? Well, here’s the answer.
Nobody.
That’s right…nobody wins.
I guess I need to explain. Well, here goes.
Salescopy length, long or short, is just a bunch of bull. There is only one thing that matters with a sales letter…it’s not boring. A sales letter could be one page long and put your prospect to sleep. Heck, if the headline is a snoozer, the prospect may not even get to the first paragraph. Formatting also matters. If the sales letter is poorly formatted, it doesn’t matter how long it is…nobody is going to read it.
I will admit…one of the best sales letters I ever read was a very long one, but it wasn’t great because it was long. It was great because it was well written. Conversely, one of the worst sales letters I ever read was a one page disaster that was so poorly written that if it was any longer, it would have been intolerable.
But I have read some great one page sales letters. They were short, to the point and told me what I wanted to know. I didn’t need anymore information than what was already on the page. I mean, if you’re selling something that doesn’t require a lot of detail, why drag it out? It makes no sense.
Salescopy length with many times depend on the price of the product, said to say. If the product is real cheap…say $7…then you really don’t need a long sales letter. Why bother anyway? You’re selling a low end item so there is no point. However, if you’re selling a $3,000 mentoring package, then you better have a ton of testimonials to your work and a great explanation as to why you’re worth that much money. That’s going to be a much longer sales letter.
So you see, it really depends on the situation as to whether a long or short sales letter is in order.
A great copywriter friend of mine once said that salescopy should be like a woman’s skirt…short enough to be interesting but long enough to cover all the details.
