Copywriting Tips – The Real Truth About Copywriting

Well, this article has been a long time coming. If you’re wondering what the inspiration for this article was, it came from an email I received from somebody interested in my copywriting book. He wanted to know if it would turn him into a master of copywriting. Well, it’s about time somebody told the truth about this skill once and for all. My apologies to the gurus who preach how easy it is to become a master of the written word. I think you’ll find this article fascinating reading.

Let me start off by saying that I learned my copywriting in bits and pieces. Some of it I got from reading blog posts of some of the greats, some I got from forums, some I got from a little help from a good friend of mine and some of it I got from just a lot of years of writing. But the truth is, outside of the X’s and O’s, most of my copywriting skills came from talent. If that sounds a little egotistical, please accept my apologies. But the truth is, no book can turn you into a master copywriter.

My wife is a school teacher of high school math. She’s been doing it for over 25 years. She is very good at it. She can teach just about anybody to do basic algebra. She’s had students who have gone on to be great people in the community where they live. She’s also had students who could never master a simple algebraic equation. Why? The answer is as simple as the equation. They just didn’t have the talent for it. It’s the reason why people can write songs for 30 years, like I have, and yet never get a hit record. They just don’t have the talent for it.

I know many people will argue with this…the ones who have something to sell you. But there is no substitute for talent. Sure, you need to learn the X’s and O’s. Without them, you have no foundation. But that’s all it is…a foundation. You still have to build the building with all the rooms. And that comes from your talent for building. Some folks will make a simple ranch home with the basics and others will be able to build a four story mansion. Both could have gotten the same instruction, but it’s their talent that took them to the next level.

So there you have it. You can buy all the copywriting books in the world, study all the gurus, read every copywriting tip in existence and scan every sales page. Only your talent is truly going to turn you into a top notch copywriter.
