Copywriting Tips – The Right Tools For the Right Job
Filed under: Copywriting; No CommentsMy dad used to tell me when I was growing up and trying to figure out the difference between a hammer and a screwdriver, that you need to have the right tools for the right job. This applies to hand tools and it also applies to the tools that copywriters use. Oh yes, copywriters have more than just their words to go to war with when writing copy. In this article, I’m going to cover just a few of the tools that any copywriter worth his salt packs in his toolkit. Make sure you have these in yours.
At the very top of my toolkit list is a headline analyzer and creator. Coming up with great headlines for your copy is critical to making sales. Why? Well, you may or may not know this but your headline is going to account for about 80% of your sales. The reason for this is very simple. If a prospect sees your headline and it doesn’t get them excited, they’re not going to take the time to read the rest of the copy. If they don’t read the rest of the copy, no sale. It’s that simple. So having a headline creation tool is key to success.
Next on the list is my swipe file. If you don’t know what a swipe file is, it’s a file that contains various pieces of copy. These could be headlines, guarantees, closings, just about anything. Why are swipe files important? Well, for several reasons. The main one is that these pieces of copy, if the swipe file is a good one, are pieces that have proven to work. By incorporating them into YOUR sales letter, you will greatly improve the effectiveness of it. This is the main reason why a swipe file is so important.
Finally, another big part of my tool kit, we have the odds and ends. These can be a number of things. One of my favorites is the interactive Johnson box. This is a piece of software that makes it so that based on what your prospect puts into the box, when asked specific questions, a certain piece of copy will appear later on in the sales letter. This is really cool and effective if used properly.
If you’re missing any of these things in YOUR toolkit, you might want to check out the review in my signature. I think you’ll find it has everything you need.
If you’re going to go to war as a copywriter, don’t leave home without your toolkit.
To YOUR Success,
Steven Wagenheim
