Copywriting Tips – Upsell – Downsell – No Sell?
Filed under: Copywriting; Tagged as: Copywriting, copywriting course, Copywriting tips, copywriting tips for beginners, learn copywritingNo CommentsSales letters are getting way out of hand. In this article, I’m going to tell you a story and then I am going to show you the BEST way to put together your sales copy so that you don’t drive your customers up the proverbial brick wall. Failure to learn from this story will lead to you losing many sales along the way, not just as a copywriter, but as a marketer.
Okay, here’s the true story. I went to a sales page for this product. I won’t mention any names because I don’t want to deal with the heat I’ll get for doing so. Let’s just call it, “Product A”. Now, I get there and read the sales copy and there is no mention of any bonuses or extras. It’s just the product. Okay, no problem. I don’t need to have bonuses when I buy something. So I click on the link to buy and before I get to the payment screen, I am hit with an upsell. The person tells me that for just $27 more, I can have all this other stuff. Okay, I really didn’t need it so I said “no thanks”.
This is where the fun begins.
After doing that, I get hit with another page. It says to me, essentially, “Okay, how about this for just $17 more?” I again said no thanks and moved on. What do you think happened? You got it. I was hit with yet another upsell for just $7 more. Finally, I said to myself, “I’ve had enough!” So I attempted to get out of the whole buying process. What do you think happened? I was hit with another screen for a downsell of the original product for $20 less.
Long story short, it took me about 10 mouse clicks to get out of the whole buying process from the first “buy now” click to the last close of my browser.
As copywriters, I understand that we have to suck every last drop out of every list bit of sales copy. But trust me on this, I wasn’t the only one who was ticked off at this sales copy. I had a discussion with quite a few people on a well known forum about it who felt it was excessive. Ultimately, many of these people who were going to buy the product never did. I can’t even begin to imagine how much money this guy lost.
So here’s my tip to you. Take it for what it’s worth.
When writing your copy, make your offer with whatever bonuses you have, and I do suggest you have at least one. Then, after the buy now link is clicked, have at max ONE upsell. That’s it. If they don’t want it, let them go on and pay for their product. Don’t annoy your customers to the point where they don’t buy from you.
I am speaking as a copywriter and a marketer.
To YOUR Success,
Steven Wagenheim
