Copywriting Tips – Worst Mistakes Copywriters Make
Filed under: Copywriting; Tagged as: Copywriting, copywriting course, Copywriting tips, copywriting tips for beginners, learn copywritingNo CommentsWe all hear talk about the right fonts to use for headlines and the right formatting for your sales page and how to do bullet points and on and on. Ironically, the worst mistakes copywriters make are less about format and more about content. This article is going to share with you my personal list of worst mistakes. Trust me, there are others. However, if you work on fixing these, you’ll copy will improve 100%.
Mistake 1 – This is probably the biggest mistake of all and it has nothing to do with what you say, but more how you say it. See, many copywriters write these very bland, boring and stiff sales letters. They sound like they’re talking to a machine and not to a real live person. And therein lies the key. The people who are going to ultimately buy your products are NOT machines. They’re not businesses; they’re not corporations; they’re not conglomerates. They’re people. A real live human being is going to be reading your message. So you want to address him or her as a human being, appealing to emotions and not to dry facts. If you do this ONE thing alone, your copy will improve dramatically.
Mistake 2 – Sometimes I’ll read a sales page and I honestly have no idea what it is that I’m supposed to be getting. I don’t know what the benefits are or why I’m supposed to even want whatever this thing is. In other words, the copywriter has not made his intentions crystal clear. This is another huge mistake that copywriters make. And the reason they make this mistake is that they assume the prospect knows these things. Don’t assume ANYTHING. You MUST spell everything out in your copy or you will lose your prospect.
Mistake 3 – The copy is not organized. It jumps from one point to another without a smooth transition between them. This is what subheads are for. That way you can transition from one part of your copy to the next and the prospect doesn’t feel like he’s missed something. Believe me, I have read many sales letters where I was lost after the first three paragraphs.
Naturally there is more to it than just these three items, but if you correct just this much, you’ll be surprised how much your copy will improve.
