I marvel at some affiliate marketers. They bust their backsides going all out to promote some affiliate product and at the end of the day, the amount of work that they’ve put in, as far as hours, compared to how much they earned in commissions, amounts to maybe $3 per hour work. It’s crazy. So you really have to ask yourself this question. Are you getting what you’re worth? Do you even know? Have you charted the hours you’ve put in and weighed them against the commission that you’re being paid per sale? These are all things you need to take into consideration when promoting an affiliate product.

Let’s start with the amount of hours that you put in to promoting your affiliate product. You have to take into consideration everything that you do, including finding the product, writing ads for it, setting up your blogs, sites, whatever. All of this is time consuming and has to be accounted for. Lots of marketers really don’t think about these things, but you must. The reason is simple. Every hour you spend doing these things is time taken away from other things you could be doing that are making you money.

What about the commission itself? I don’t understand why affiliate marketers would promote products that either have low commission percentages or low commission dollars. Most products today have commission percentages of at least 50%. Many of the top product creators put products out there at 70% or even 75%. These are the products that you should be going after. As for the dollar amounts, is it really worth your time to promote a product that only pays $10 commission? I don’t know about you but I have better things to do with my time.

I realize that some people are satisfied to make any money at all, but as you do this more and more, you’re going to want to maximize your ROI. Selling cheap products or products with 25% commission isn’t going to get you there.
