Ethical questions come up in all forms of marketing. One of the biggest questions that comes up in regard to affiliate marketing is this one. Is it okay for me to sell a product even though I have never tried it myself? For some reason, many people seem to think that if you haven’t tried something, you have no business selling it. Well, this is 100% wrong. I’m going to explain why and I am also going to explain how to sell products that you have never tried and still sound credible.

Okay, let’s start with why it’s okay to promote something even though you’ve never tried it. A man goes into a computer store and sees an external hard drive on the shelf behind the counter. He asks the man working there to bring it down for him. The salesman gets the box and hands it to the person. The customer asks some questions about the product. The salesman has never used it himself. All he can tell the customer is that it’s a reputable company and people seem to be pleased with it. They’ve had no returns. The customer decides to buy the external hard drive.

The above scenario goes on everyday in all walks of life for more industries than you can imagine. Think of all the times YOU’VE gone into a store and bought something where you had questions and the salesperson answered them for you. Do you think these salespeople have used every single one of these products? If you do, you are quite naive. They haven’t. They can’t. But that doesn’t stop them from selling them.

The key is knowing what you can say and what you can’t say as an affiliate. If you are promoting a product that you have never used, you can’t say, “This product is really great. I’d be lost without it” because that is just an outright lie and is, in my opinion, unethical. However, there is nothing preventing you from telling people that the reviews you have read on the product have all been excellent and from what you hear, there have been very few refunds. That is perfectly acceptable if it’s true.

If every salesman in the world had to use a product before they could sell it, we’d have no salespeople. It just doesn’t make sense. So use your head when it comes to promoting products you personally haven’t tried and you’ll be just fine.
