Affiliate Marketing Tips – Is the Return Worth the Effort?
No CommentsThe question is pretty straight forward. Are you getting the return you should be for the effort you’re putting in? Truth is, a lot of people really don’t know. Oh sure, it’s easy enough to figure out when you’re just looking at dollars spent on advertising against how much you’re making per sale. But what about your time? Isn’t THAT worth something to you at all? Well, if it isn’t, then maybe you don’t need to read this article. However, if you realize that time is important, you might want to continue on.
As I said, figuring out raw expenses and income is easy. You spend 10 cents a click on PPC marketing, make a sale on every 100 clicks for a $30 affiliate sale so your profit is $20 on every sale…$30 minus the $10 you spent on the 100 clicks. Simple, right? But what about your time? What if you’re doing something that doesn’t take money out of your wallet but takes many hours out of your day. In that case, is the affiliate product you’re selling worth the effort?
This is where figuring out “worth” is not so cut and dry. The reason is simple. Everybody places a different value on their time. For me, my time is worth $100 an hour. So for every hour I put into something, I better at least get $101 return or I’m totally wasting my time. Well, in my case, I know that every article I write will bring me in at least one sale. Since it takes me 15 minutes to write an article, that means each article is worth $25 of my time. Therefore, in order for me to make article writing and marketing worth my time, I have to sell an affiliate product that pays me at least $25 per sale.
In reality, I usually make more than one sale per article, but most make me at least one. This makes it worth my while to do article marketing for affiliate products PROVIDED that I’m making at least $25 per sale. When you come down to it, this isn’t much different from having to sell a $30 product through PPC on keywords that cost you 10 cents per click. It’s just a matter of the money either coming out of your wallet or your time.
Point is, before you go about selling any affiliate product, you MUST sit down and figure out what it’s going to cost you to promote it, either through time or money, and how much you’re going to get paid for each sale. Otherwise, you could very well be wasting your time and/or money.
