The Internet in general changes quickly. Affiliate marketing specifically has changed a lot just in the last couple of months. Between the Amazon changes, eliminating affiliates who live in states that now demand Amazon collect sales tax and Google’s slap on affiliates promoting products on blogs through PPC where the blogs have affiliate links on them, affiliates have taken quite a hit of late. So what do you do when this happens? This article is going to give you a few suggestions. I hope they help.

At the top of my list is diversification. I have said this since the beginning of my marketing days and I will continue to say it until I’m six feet under. Never, and I mean NEVER put all your eggs in one basket. I don’t care how sure a thing it may seem. Nothing lasts forever. I was promoting an affiliate product for over six years. I thought it would sell forever. It didn’t. It finally died and I gave up on it. Had I only promoted that one product, I’d be in deep trouble right now. But because I promote about 20 different affiliate products, I had little to worry about.

Another thing you MUST do is keep an eye on industry news. Things just don’t happen overnight. Usually, if there is going to be a change in affiliate marketing, there is some kind of notice. For example, this situation with Amazon. We should have seen this coming as soon as the state laws starting coming down the pike. When your state makes a law saying companies have to start collecting sales tax from their affiliates, you can be sure that it won’t be long before it actually happens. By being prepared, you can work on alternate plans before the hammer drops.

Finally, always, and I mean ALWAYS be on the lookout for new products and opportunities. Even though I am currently promoting as many products as I am, I am still looking for new ones to promote. Why? Because I know that there is always a possibility that one of the products I’m promoting can go bust at any time. People who get lazy and rest on their past success are the ones who end up getting into trouble.

These three simple tips, diversification, keeping up with current news and always looking for new products, will keep you out of the affiliate marketing dog house.
