As you become more and more known for being a top affiliate marketer, you’re going to get more and more people asking you to promote their products. While the temptation is to try to promote as many as you can to make as much money as you can, there is a time when you have to learn to say no…for a variety of reasons. This article is going to touch on a few of the main ones. You may or may not agree with these, but from my experience, I find them to be pretty sound reasons. As I tell all my mentoring students…proceed at your own risk.

At the top of my list for saying no is simply that the product is not one that you believe in. For example, just today I was asked to promote an article submission service. I don’t believe in them. The reason is simple. They mass submit articles, mostly to directories that are worthless, and thus, in my opinion, are a total waste of time as they provide no real value. The reason I say no to this is because I don’t want to destroy my reputation with the people I recommend things to. Promoting garbage products will do that in a heartbeat. Naturally, if you don’t care about your reputation and only care about making a few bucks, you’ll ignore this advice.

Another reason for saying no is time. How many products can you effectively promote at one time? Remember, if you’re going to promote a product the right way, you have to get it, read it, write a review of it and do a whole lot of promotion. Can you REALLY do this if you’re promoting 20 different products all at one time? There are only so many hours in the day. Ultimately, if you take on too much, you can’t do a good job with any of the products you promote. I’d rather promote one or two products and promote them well enough to make a decent income off of them. That’s why I finished towards the top of every affiliate promotion I get involved in.

Finally, there is perception. If my list is getting a different email every single day about a new product that I’m hawking, the perception is going to be that I’m just after the money…even if the products I’m promoting I really believe in. See reason one on this. The point is, even if you believe in a product, if you come off as an advertising machine, this is going to tick off your list. The exception is if you build a list based on the premise that you’ll be recommending products to them on a regular basis, such as if you are offering a review service like Traffic Testers does. Then it’s different. If not, you’re looking to come off as a money grubbing shark.

There you have it. Three reasons why you sometimes have to say no to promoting a product. I follow these religiously.

As I said…proceed at your own risk.
