I get a kick out of how marketers are so tough when they’re sitting behind their keyboards. They’ll say anything and do anything. I mean it’s not like somebody can reach through the PC screen and grab them by the throat. But are you ready for the fallout when it comes to the emails you send out for your marketing campaigns? If you don’t know what I’m talking about, keep reading. There is an important lesson in this article.

Remember back in the good old days when the Rich Jerk came on the scene? Did you see some of the emails that he sent to his list? If you were on it, you got quite an earful. You were called everything from an idiot to a loser. He didn’t spare anybody’s feelings. And make no mistake about it, he got quite an earful himself in return. The thing is, he was ready for hit. He knew it was coming. Heck, he expected it. It was all part of his plan. He was going to sell to people by ticking them off. And it worked like a charm. Nobody has ever done it like him since. He literally invented that genre of marketing.

Every email we send out is going to affect our target audience in some way. If your marketing plan is to market on the edge and use some of his tactics, you need to be prepared for the backlash. It’s going to come. Your unsubscribe rates are going to be higher for sure. That is of course unless your target market is used to that kind of abuse. That’s where knowing your audience is so important. You can probably get away with talking to young adults in a way that you can’t with older folks like me. Of course I’ll probably just ignore you.

The biggest mistake marketers make is that they don’t think about what the effects of their emails are going to have. Even something as innocent as sending an email that says, “Sorry, I Forgot The Link” can have repercussions because some people, especially in the make money online market, are going to see it as a ploy…even if it was an honest mistake.

So think about what you’re doing when you send out an email. If you suspect that there could be problems, don’t be surprised when there are.
