    Email Marketing Tips – Don’t Try to Please Everybody

    A very good marketing friend of mine by the name of Paul Myers has a saying. It goes something like, “When you try to please everyone, you please no one.” Truer words were never spoken. And when it comes to your email marketing, this is equally as true. I am going to share with you a true story and I hope you will get something out of it.

    I had decided to run a special this Christmas. I was going to send out a different special offer each day for 12 days. You know, the 12 days of Christmas? Okay, I know it’s corny but it’s also very effective if you do it right. Well anyway, I made it very clear at the beginning of the series of emails that each offer would only be good for one day and then on the next day, the next offer would replace the one before it. So each person had only one day to take advantage of the offer.

    Well, today I got a very angry email from somebody who was quite annoyed that the previous day’s offer had been taken down. She was very disappointed in how I had “treated” her. Well, at first I didn’t know how to respond, but I did remember a similar email I had gotten a while back when I made a similar offer but didn’t limit the date range. The person wrote to me, “It’s not a special offer if we can get it anytime we want.” So this person was upset that it WASN’T exclusive to that day only.

    As you can see, you are going to upset somebody no matter how you run your business. Each method of marketing you use is going to tick somebody off. Count on it. Therefore, what you have to do is very simple. You have to do what is best for YOU. Now, you’re not going to know what that is without extensive testing. But once you’ve figured it out, which essentially comes down to what method ticks fewer people off, use it. It’s that simple.

    No, it’s not the perfect solution. Nothing is, simply because there is no perfection in this world. The day that the perfect solution is created, please let me know.
