Email Marketing Tips – Keeping Track of Your Emails
No CommentsDo you know what sucks about getting older? You forget things. My wife tells me that if my head wasn’t attached to my body, I’d leave it at church every Sunday. Well, when you do as much email marketing as I do, it’s hard remembering all the promotions that you sent out. What did you tell list X? Is it the same thing you told list Y? Is it the same thing you told them one month ago? Are you making an update to an earlier email? Are you going into a new area? Is what you’re telling them going to require knowledge that you gave them previously? If so, did you give that knowledge to everybody?
Have I confused you yet? Trust me, the questions don’t stop. When you’ve been email marketing for over six years like I have, you’ve written a lot of things. Sometimes you end up repeating yourself. If you are, has it been long enough since the last time you wrote on the subject so that your target market doesn’t send you a nasty email back saying something like, “You just told me this yesterday you jackass!” Well, if you’re memory is THAT bad then you DO have a problem.
Okay, so what’s the solution? Well, what I do is simple. I keep a checklist of emails that I’ve sent to each set of prospects. I take a look at that list BEFORE I even go to create a new email. If it’s something I’ve talked about before, I look at the date. If it was six months ago, it’s pretty safe to be able to talk about it again if it’s going to be an exact duplicate of the info. If you’re going to give an update on the info, then it doesn’t matter when you last emailed unless it was so long ago your prospects won’t remember it. In that case, then you have to remind them.
One thing you want to do is remain consistent with your views and opinions, unless of course they really do change. In that case, you tell your prospects that you used to feel this way about this topic but because of recent events (explain the events) you have changed your mind and explain why. Trust me, you’ll get a lot of respect that way.
Naturally, if you don’t send a lot of emails, this isn’t a problem. But if you do, you might want to consider keeping a list of what emails you’ve sent.
It just might save you some embarrassment and/or trouble down the road.
