Yeah, right…tell me another story. You’ve all heard that expression. It’s said by somebody who doesn’t believe what you’re saying because the story was either unbelievable or was said in a boastful way. When that happens, your stories get tossed in the trash with yesterday’s news. Well, when told correctly, stories can improve your email marketing campaigns dramatically. The key is knowing what to do. This article is going to cover the concept of telling stories in your emails.

First of all, why do you want to tell stories? Well, you’ve heard the old saying…facts tell, stories sell. Yes, it’s a bit of a cliche now, but it’s still true. The question is why? Well, we live in a skeptical world. Since the days of the dot com bust, people are more wary about buying things online. As a result, it’s harder to get their trust. By telling them a story about yourself, you break down the barriers between you and your prospect.

Let’s take for example, my story. It’s not one I have told often but it is worth going over. I started marketing online because I lost my corporate America job. I had no choice in the matter. Oh sure, I tried looking for work for a while, but after months of having no luck, I turned to the Internet. I went through all the growing pains that everybody else goes through as well. I was clueless to start and had very little success. But gradually, things started coming together for me. Today, I earn a very nice living from the comfort of my home. It didn’t happen overnight, but with dedication and perseverance, it did happen.

The above story is rather shortened, but I think you get the idea. By telling the prospect YOUR story, you help break down the walls between you. Let’s say you’re selling a book on how to fix PCs yourself. You can tell your story of how you were a total PC illiterate until you got this book and then because of it, you can actually put together a PC from scratch. And this tactic will work for any product or service.

The reason it works is because you’re telling something about yourself, something that your prospect can relate to. So don’t be afraid to tell your story in your emails.

You’ll find the results to be quite substantial.
