Everybody has their favorite tips when it comes to email marketing. You’ve read all the experts and have probably taken what they’ve said as the gospel. But have you REALLY taken the time to look at your email marketing campaign and its results and analyzed them? If you did, you just might find that the experts’ advice isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. But why? Is it wrong? Are they lying to you? Well, the truth is, yes and no. If you’re confused, keep reading. This is going to be a real eye opener…I promise.

You can take just about any aspect of email marketing, from the subject of your email to the content to the last PS…if you use one. Each expert has his opinion on each of these things. But what are these opinions based on? They’re based on personal experience. I mean after all, that’s all anybody has to go on…personal experience. I have my own opinions as well that I freely share. The problem with these opinions is that they may not always translate well when taken on by another person.

For example, some experts say to keep your emails short and to the point because people are sick and tired of reading long emails. Others say to give as much info as you can in them because people need that info in order to make decisions. Can they both be right? The answer is, yes. See, email marketing is not an exact science. A lot of your success will depend on who your target market is. If you’re writing for a bunch of Harvard grads, they probably won’t have a problem reading a long email. However, if you’re writing for somebody with a 5th grade education, maybe not so much.

It all comes down to your audience. Now, in some cases, you’re going to know exactly who your audience is depending upon the niche. Somebody who is interested in classroom management tips is probably a certified teacher and thus will have no problem reading a long email. They’re going to want lots of information to help them make a decision on the product you may be offering. However, if you’re targeting the gaming niche, you might not want to go into as much detail. A simple, “Hey, check out this cool game” with a brief description, may be all you need.

Ultimately, it comes down to testing and what works for YOU for the market you’re targeting. So take what the gurus say with a grain of salt.

Believe it or not, they don’t always have all the answers.
