Forum Marketing Tips – Digging Up Old Threads
Filed under: Home Business, Internet Marketing, Make Money Online; Tagged as: internet marketing strategies, internet marketing strategy, strategic internet marketingNo CommentsToday at the Warrior Forum, somebody brought up that a member was resurrecting old threads… some as old as a year or more. Yes, this can be rather annoying especially when a subject seems to be dead and buried. In this article, I want to go into why this is annoying and also when it might actually be appropriate to bring up an old thread. Yes, there are exceptions. But please remember, they ARE exceptions.
Okay, so why is digging up old threads annoying? Well, the nature of a forum makes it so. Members want to talk about the most current events. For example, if Google just made a change, THAT is what they want to talk about. If there is a new product being launched, THAT is what they want to talk about. They don’t want to talk about a product that was launched a year ago and may not even be available anymore. These old threads do nothing but clog up the forum and tick off the members…making YOU the target of their attacks.
However, having said that, there are times when digging up an old thread might actually be beneficial to everybody. Let’s say that company ABC made a policy change XYZ on January of year one. It’s such a major change that a thread is created and goes on for many pages. The change ends up greatly affecting many Internet marketers. Now, let’s say that one year later, company ABC decides to end that particular policy. This now becomes big news. But because of the reason for the initial change, background info is needed in order for people to understand the change back.
In THIS case, digging up the old thread and posting as a continuation to it might be the best course of action in order to get everybody up to speed. Sure, another option is to start a new thread and post a link in it to the old thread. But the problem with that is that members then have to bounce between two threads and with both now in the spotlight, you’re inevitably going to have members posting to both. Now you have a real headache on your hands…two threads about the same thing when one would have been sufficient.
It’s not a black and white issue. Sometimes a thread with marketing info can be made obsolete and bringing it up and pointing it out might not be a bad idea. It’s a judgment call. Point is…use your common sense. If there’s no real GOOD reason to resurrect a thread other than to just get your post count up (we all know when members do that) then don’t do it. Your fellow members will love you for not clogging up their forum with old news.
