If that sounds like an odd question, it’s not. Truth is, many home business owners THINK that they’re running a business but in reality, all they are doing is making money. What’s the difference? Well, naturally, this is just my opinion. To me the difference is planning and mindset. Sure, you can make money and do very well just making money. But if you want to build something that is going to be stable and grow then you have to build a real business. Okay, I’m going to show you the difference with examples.

Let’s take the make money model. In this model, you might do something like the following. You create a product. Maybe it’s an ebook. You put it on the Internet and sell it. Eventually, the ebook stops selling because it’s old, outdated, whatever. The reasons don’t matter. The reality is, the ebook no longer makes you any money. Your business is effectively dead unless you either come out with another ebook or do something else. To me, this is making money, and there is nothing wrong with it. The downside is that you’re always going to have to come up with something new to keep the money coming in.

To me, running a business is when you do something like this. You create a service similar to something like an Aweber which is a list building service. As long as there are marketers online, there will always be a need for a service like this. Aweber realistically never has to worry about having to create something else to keep the money coming in. Sure, they will have to make upgrades to their system and offer new features in order to keep up with competitors, but they’ll never have to worry about not having a viable service that sells.

To me, THAT is a business. Personally, I do a little of both. I have a service that I provide but I also sell ebooks and other products. There is no reason you can’t do both. However, if you rely on just selling products that can become outdated, you run the risk of seeing your business dry up literally overnight.

I’m not passing judgment on what model you choose. Just understand that there are pitfalls to making money.
