If you’re reading this article, I’m going to assume two things. The first is that you’re running your own home business. The second is that you want to find out if you’re wasting your time or not. Well, I can’t tell you if you’re wasting your time. However, I can point out a few things that IF you are doing, might be considered a waste of time. You’ll have to decide for yourself.

At the top of my list is procrastination. Some people excuse this as “the thought process.” They need to think through their problem. They need to make sure that they come up with just the right game plan and execute it just so. Anything less is looking for disaster. Am I right? Well, the problem with this mindset is that most people NEVER reach the point where they think they’re ready to take action. There is always something that isn’t quite right. Ultimately, nothing gets done. Is this you? If so, it’s time to make it stop.

Another big time waster for home business owners is checking stats…often. Yes, you do need to test and track your ad campaigns or whatever it is you’re doing. But that doesn’t mean pulling up your AWStats every hour on the hour to see how many visitors you just got. Once a day to check stats is fine. The time you waste doing this could be spent on more productive things like writing ads, working on your web site and so on. Are you a stat watcher? If so, it’s time to stop.

Finally, there are those little distractions that we allow ourselves because we don’t really know what we want to do next. The reason we don’t know is because we really don’t have a solid business plan. But that’s a topic for another article as it’s beyond the scope of this one. Anyway, what happens is we end up going to sites like YouTube to watch videos or Twitter to talk about our dull lives. Before we know it, we’ve wasted two hours watching old Beatles videos or chatting with our Facebook friend Dirk who just got a new water ski. Is this you? If so, it’s time to stop.

Look, you essentially have two choices. You can run a home business or you can waste time doing other things. And if wasting time doing other things is what you REALLY want, that’s fine.

Just don’t expect to show much income at the end of the year when tax time comes.

Of course there are advantages to that…no taxes to pay.
